3G would be nice but it kills a battery

its not 3G alone that decimates the battery. Its lack of an efficient CPU which is the primary reason (along with internal circuitry), followed by an OS not augmented to powersave properly, then with processing intensive applications that are running code in serial telling the OS to run a thread until complete all at one before going to the next thread. Futhermore, having memory (RAM) far away from the cpu will reduce battery efficiency as well.
Main culprit is the Xscale cpu ... its really OLD and shouldn't even be produced today. we need low power dual core dual duty cpu's like Texas instruments or what qualcomm has been innovating in.
