Default DoD Tunnel - Do I Need My Tinfoil Hat?

Please Login to Remove!

I was just browsing the engineering screen on my new Bold 9700 and under the "Tunnel Engineering" Screen it lists 4 open tunnels. The first is to blackberry.net, the second is to my carrier (t-mo), the third is to my WLAN, and there is a fourth VPN open to 7.74.132.213. The first 3 make perfect sense, so I decided to see what this VPN is for.

After looking up the address on arin.net it shows that it is registered to
DoD Network Information Center
3990 E. Broad Street
Columbus, OH 43218

It says the tunnel is OPEN_READY and although the Tx Octet (byte) Count is 0, it has received 1,963,367 Octets. The tunnel has been open for over 7 hours so it must open when the phone is turned on.

I want to know why I apparently have established a VPN tunnel with the DoD. I know that Blackberrys are used extensively in the Government, however it can't make sense that every Blackberry sold (even if just in the US) is preconfigured with DoD VPN tunnels. Is this some type of government back door or my imagination and a pre-configuration setting?

Wirelessly posted (White and Nerdy)

Ummm

I actually remember looking into this once. On the stock OS, there is an app that is a security thing for the DOD... I can't seem to find it on 5.0, but I remember it on my 4.6 bold. It was some kind of security encryption dealio. I think it had something to do with a root certificate. I remember reading it under the info for that specific app

No, I don't have the DoD certificates loaded on my phone. I have to believe that it is T-Mobile because when I close the tunnel I loose UMA connection, but why would arin.net have the wrong owner listed for an IP range?
