Well, I got my hands on OS 4.0.77 and OS 2.6.1 thanks to an anonymous person that is Beta Testing the software.

I will answer any questions within reason regarding the software and the plans for the software.

Its running smoothly on my 950 and on my recently aquired 7200 but for some reason it wont run on my 7750.

My question: How do I go about finding a little birdy to poop os4 on my head? lol ;)

My main curiosity is the interface itself, still the same, or did they change it up any? Is it faster, cleaner looking?

OK, Here we go...

1. Passwords-Do you have the flexibility to have your password time out in more than 30 mintues?

2. ScreenSaver-Are you able to customize the stand-by screen without jumping through alot of hoops as in today's 7510 implementation?

3. Backlight-Are you able to have the light come on automatically when a button is pressed?

4. Wireless auto off-Like in the feature for power off, one can set the handheld to power off the complete unit on a said time. Has this feature been extended to the wireless antenna?

5. Polymorphic tone support-Any new stuff here? The tones available for the 7510 kinda suck.

6. What are the key changes in the GUI? Have you noticed any bugs that have been fixed (or at least addressed)?

A couple more:

1. Are you able to map more fields to contacts (inbcluding Birthday and Anniversary)?

2. Can you search the Calendar?

3. How easy is it to view graphic attachments?

4. Is there any kind of image viewer module included or supported?

Without 4.0 BES you can't do much as far as new features. Here is what RIM is saying at their T-Mobile seminars traveling the country.

You can view image attachments (bmp, JPG, TIFF, GIF), there is an image viewer
You will have fields for home addresses and more in address book.
You can sort addresses by categories
Everything wirelessly synchs
MDS is more efficient (Faster Browsing)
You can provision the device wirelessly, no need for desktop software.
You can customize the standby screen with your own image.
You can customize your desktop with your own image.
Set out of office and filters from the BB.

Correct, some of those can still be done, but the OS is rock solid.
Viewing image attachements in email is a breeze, havent figured out the desktop image thing yet. There is a nice password keeper that comes with the software.

The main thing, this coming from reliable sources.

You will SOON see MDS available in your BWC (Blackberry Web Client) and therefore third party mds or a BES server is unecassary to access actual html pages and use third party apps that require mds.

I was told this will be released along with 4.0

Software 2.6.1 for your 850 is the normal software that is released to the public. There is no "4.0" software for the 850/950, there is not enough memory on that model. The software for the 957/857 is going to be 2.7.

OK my questions are:

1. MDS with the BWC - does this mean that potentially (if the carriers upgrade their BWC - I am with T-Mobile) this will be an option for us non-BES customers?

2. What about the calendar synch via BWC - any chance this will be there for us now BES customers?

3. Calendar synch through the desktop - today I cannot see the invitees to meetings - will this be added? I know that the BES calendar synch with the current BES allows for more data to be synched than the desktop synch?

This would be a hardware feature not software.

Where did you get your version? How can the rest of us become testers?

It sounds like 4.0 is making great strides in the right direction. At the moment, are there any carriers using a version of BWC that will support a lot of the new functionality?

As for where I got it, I can't tell you or I'd have to kill you.... I did not get the 4.0.0.100 from this website, but you can check this post. (I do not condone it if it's against RIM policy, but am letting you know of one possible route)

Have no idea of any carrier deployment plans, except I know my carrier is planning to deploy it by the end of the year. (Rogers Canada)

Unfortunately Nobody I know of has access to CDMA software. I only have access to GPRS software and it will work on any GPRS device. I am looking myself for a copy of 4.0 for CDMA.
