Angry Unlimited Data: TMO vs. Rogers

Please Login to Remove!

Hey all.

Someone with T-Mobile told me that the unlimited Blackberry data plan on T-Mobile is $20.00/month. (is this right?)

The closest thing to unlimited on Rogers is $95.00/month and is only 50mb (1600 emails per day - not sure if that's close to unlimited, but it's not unlimited)

If this is right, why is it so much more expensive in Canada? I don't get it!

To simply answer your question, Rogers has a monopoly on the data services in Canada, and as you might know, typically when one company is the only one to offer a service the prices are sky high.

Go with T-Mo if you can.

The T-Mobile pricing is correct. $19.99 unlimited data plan (BIS) when added to a voice plan or $29.99 as a unlimited data only plan (no voice plan). $9.99 add on for BES.

Bell Mobility and Telus are much cheaper than Rogers but they are CDMA networks.

Apparently Rogers isn't allowed to tell us how much data we've used until our bill comes... that's what a rep said... that's ridiculous!

Not true. Both Bell and Telus have Blackberrys. Rogers monopoly is on the GSM network. Unless you travel outside North America, you have a choice of 3 carriers.

Agreed that Bell & Telus & Rogers all offer BlackBerrys. However, you are INCORRECT that within North America you are limited to 3 carriers.

Canada:
Rogers
Bell
Telus

USA:
Verizon
Sprint
Nextel
AT&T
Cingular
TMobile USA
AllTel

Mexico:
? (I'm not sure of sorry)

THats 10 providers, but if you disregard the SPlit-Branding, then thats 8 carriers, significantly more than your 3 above. Notice the larger usuage of CDMA carriers in North America.

Now, the situation is that Rogers is the largest provider by the numbers & full coverage coast to coast, border to Arctic Circle. With just around 29-32 Million Canadians as our population, and only some 6.9Million on Rogers alone - not sure the totals on other providers here in Canada - thats not enough revenue for to warrant unlimited data. There's just 250K TOTAL business & consumers using data on that network (BB's, PocketPC's, S60's, Data Cards, stationary modems, portable modems, police cars, ETC)!

So until this changes we're stuck. Nothing a single person can do. Its gotta be a movement, but as such we as Canadians are TOO complacent, mostly spending money on clothes, houses, spouses, and of course CARS. Furniture comes in WAY above cellphones.

Well I feel sorry for us too. Maybe you guys can come and free us from the tyranny of Mr. Rogers? Pulleeeezzz...
(and if you do some research on the initiator of this thread you can see that there some evidence he has a Blackberrry of Mass Destruction. A BMD.) (although others have disputed this and think he has a Bowel Movement of Death.)

(please don't take my comments as politically serious, just joshing.)

I was just browsing the email/data plans for British Columbia. Bell charge almost the same as Telus and Rogers charge many dollars more.

Newbie needs a little help with data usage. I am new to blackberry and have signed up for the above plan. I have no idea how much web usage I can do with 50mb. On average I receive about 30 emails a day. What kind of web usage can expect from 50 mb, taking into account number of emails i get

thanks
