I've had my Blackberry Curve for almost a month and one there is one thing that I'm finding more and more frustrating about this phone... I hate having to use the holster in my pocket!

I want to be able to keep the phone in my pocket without using the holster. (The holster is bulky in my pocket and takes a second hand to remove and hold...) The problem is that, without the holster, buttons are continually bumped due to the wide keyboard, turning on the backlight, draining batteries and running programs or making unwanted calls. Using the 'Keyboard Lock' function prevents the programs/calls from being made, but doesn't prevent the light from being continually turned on.

Does anyone know a good solution?

Is there a way to make the phone stay in standby (with the screen off) until a specific button ('Answer', for example) is pressed?
Are there any cases (not belt clips) that would prevent random buttons from being pressed in my pocket?

its called stand by mode



push the top mute button for 3 secs... it will go into standy, which will still do everything needed (make receive calls, sms, emails ect ect) and to bring out of standy push the same button

In KB lock, the light will come on if keys are accidentally pressed.

I think the standby mode is best (or a holster, lol).

There is a mute button on top of the phone.. press and hold it for a few seconds and the phone goes into standby mode. This locks the keyboard and turns the backlight off.

yes... most of the sponsors sell them, get a genuine blackberry case, ebay (look for "sleeper magnet")

Yes, ALL the RIM OEM holsters have the magnet, and most of the others do because it is required to put the BB to sleep.

I guess I'll go looking for one. I now have a leather holder that I just don't like. Too big.

didnt your curve come with the leather pouch? that will put the device in holster mode when placed in properly. it keeps the device in your pocket, and protects it (somewhat). seems to be a second alternative for you

Well, frankly, I got tired of the belt holster and decided to simply change my entire wardrobe; I now only wear a shirt that has a pocket. I just hit up the local Goodwill store and got a pile of nice pocket-collared shirts and went from there. I already carry a Leatherman, LED flashlight/ laser pointer, holder for my glasses / sunglasses, and keychain on my belt and just didn't want anymore hanging there. Besides, I don't have the problem of stuff bumping the buttons either. And in all the months I've had it there, it's never fallen out. ...might be worth thinking about...

get into the habit of holding standby button after every call. works for me =)

Keeping the device allows lint and dirt to get in and around the trackball and keys, causing the to stick and become partially inoperable. Not a good idea IMHO.

best buy has a pretty neat rim oem holster for blackberrys...i have it, it has the magnet, works pretty good.

Thanks Cory and Dyesiegwa! (And Cableguy) I didn't know that the mute button could be used to put it in standby mode. I must have missed that in my skim of the manual... That is exactly what I was looking for.

It sounds like prior to changing your wardrobe, you were constantly fighting crime with a black cape and mask and a utility belt.

I don't like anything but one key and my phone in my pockets and absolutely nothing on my belt. I just put my BB to sleep and stick it in my pocket. Works great.

OMG!! I am so glad i found this question. I have had my Bberry for 2 months and have no idea what I would do without it, but have always wondered what it meant by "holster". I thought maybe a cradle was what they were talking about, but RIM calls it a Holster. I didn't know what the pouch in the box was for. I thought it was kinda dumb, but now I know there is a magnet in it. Have no idea what it is for, but I won't use the thing anyway. I use the mute button as well.

If you are not using your ptt button on the left, remap it to keylock. I have done this since the start and have had great luck with it. It becomes second nature after a day or so of hanging up a conversation and just jabbing the button to lock everything.
