While it's good to see that VZW is claiming that they fixed some problems in this release, I don't see any changes to keyboard backlighting or ringer volume on mine.

I updated the O/S too, and I see no changes at all. I have to agree, the keyboard backlighting and ringer volume did not change at all. I guess it is time to ditch the crippled device because who knows when Verizon will REALLY address the problems.

Has anyone tried using the new GSM unlocking feature? Any thoughts? We already knew we could unlock the 8830 by purchasing the phone at full price and calling Verizon. Any idea what this new feature might entail?

The Signal level indicator is fixed! It use to jump from full signal to one bar every few seconds. With the update, that appears to be fixed.

sorry guys I am new here, and pretty new to bes as well, is there some way to push this update via BES to 3 8830 devices without having to do it with the sync? all 3 of my users are in remote locations and VP's

I did a quick search around and cant find any details on how to do this so maybe its not possible, or like usual maybe I am just missing it.

thanks for your help

Default Download not working

I've been trying to download the new OS release for the last hour. After entering my phone number and selecting device software, I just get a page saying "File not found."

It looks like Verizon took the file off the site. Curious, maybe they pulled it down because of a problem? Or, too many downloads.. Who knows.

I was able to download it just fine. The file is ~70MB.

Does anyone know where the list of fixes is posted?

From my Verizon rep this afternoon:

R-

FYI there's a new software update to the Blackberry 8830 at < BlackBerry™ 4.x Software Download >.
In addition to a few minor fixes, the software update will now allow the phone to support Stereo Bluetooth, and it will allow us to unlock the SIM card. Once the software is updated, you can contact our Global Support Team at 908-559-4899 to get the unlock code for your phone.

Yeah, I read that. I was hoping it'd be officially posted somewhere, like from VZW website.

I just called, the correct phone number is (803) 400-4455 which is the Global Phone Services Team.

They will fax you the form titled "Important Information Regarding Use of Non-Global Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Cards in Verizon Wireless Global Phones" which states that you need to have either paid full retail price or met the minimum contract term for that line of service:

For each Global Phone for which an Unlock Code is requested, you must either have: (i) met the minimum contract term for that line of service; or (ii) paid full retail for the Global Phone. If you have not met either of these requirements, an Unlock Code may be provided to You upon receipt of payment of the difference between the amount paid by You for the Global Phone and the full retail price of the Global Phone. A credit card is required for payment.

Your Mileage May Vary but I still don't see how the software update makes it easier to unlock.
