Default Knife-Edge cutover database question - opinion

Please Login to Remove!

I'm about to do a knife-edge cutover of our single BES from a physical server to a VM running in our ESX environment. Currently our BES runs its database locally but I'd like to move it to one of our SQL servers. We are not having performance issues and we only have 120 users but I figured moving the DB might make the knife-edge a little easier and also give us room to grow in the future.

In your opinion, in what order should I proceed?
  1. Move the db off to the SQL server, run from the current BES for a couple weeks THEN do the knife-edge? (this is my current plan)
  2. Move the db off to the SQL server, then do the knife-edge in the same day/maintenance window
  3. Do the knife-edge, THEN migrate the db to the SQL server
  4. Do the knife-edge but leave the db local

Thanks for your thoughts/opinions!

Option 1, and give it about a week or 2. If any problems come up, you'll prolly get them in the first 24-48 hours.

Sounds good...thanks for the confirmation. I'll be doing the DB move tonight. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Less is more. Definitely don't want to tackle SQL move and Knife Edge on same maintenace window.

Aye. One thing at a time. If anything blows up, you want to be sure where the process broke. If you do both at the same time, you may not be able to track where the problem occurred.

Well I got the database moved successfully last night. Good ol' TSupport had to come in and save the day however. Me and our SQL admin followed the KB03112 article to the letter but something didn't exactly work right. I can't tell you what but the RIM technician had to get into the registry on the BES and modify some settings. All in all it only took about an hour and everybody is getting their mail just fine. I'm planning to give it a week and then do the cutover to the new server. That is unless I finally get my BOLD and get distracted

I am prepping the new server to do the knife-edge the first of next week and I came across something that I wasn't sure of. I was going to go ahead and install the BES software and just not start the services till next week when I'm ready. So I'm going through the install of the BES and i got to the part about the database. I chose my new SQL server as the location of the database and when I hit Next it asks me if I want to Upgrade the database. Will this affect the users if I do this during production hours? I thought I would be able to do everything except turn on the services ahead of time. I can certainly wait until off-hours if need be but if I can go ahead then that would be ideal. Thanks for the help!

That should not happen if both new and old BES are same version.
At least I would not think so.

Thats kinda what i thought too. Our current BES is 4.1.6. On the new server I am installing 4.1. When I finished that I was going to go back and install SP6.

um why do all that?

Download 4.1.6 trail version of BES and use your SRP key in it. (then it wont be trial)

Then you dont have to upgrade it.

That might be why it wants to dosomething to the DB.

So there is a version that you can download that has SP 6 already wrapped up in the installer? I logged into the TSupport download page and only saw the BES4.1 installer and then all 6 service packs. I assumed since the original is 453mb and SP 6 is only 313mb that the SP 6 install is not the complete package.

I just went to the main website and grabbed the trial and it had 4.1.6.

I needed it for remote BES manager after going to 4.1.6.

While you can go ahead and install the software and not start the services, you can always wait until Cut Over Day and install then. It's a quick and easy install. That's what I did.

I was looking for the full 4.1.6 also.
Called tsupport and they advised that it is not available on the download page.
They emailed me a link to their ftp site.
