Default GPS Question(Not the question you think)

Please Login to Remove!

Ok, I'm not here to ask why google maps isnt working with my 8830's internal GPS...nope.

I am a long time WinMobile user and have since 'upgraded' to the 8830.I love it. The only issue I am having with this device is GPS applications. I do have a GPS puck that is used to obtain my location. My question is are there any GPS applications for BBerry that preload maps onto a microSD card? I have found that using GMaps and BB Maps that I am driving too quick and it doesnt stream the map quick enough. Any Tom Tom like applications for Blackberry? Thanks for the input. These forums have been fantastic for reference thus far.

Birddog, i'm not trying to be a jerk in this...but did you read my question at all? I have a GPS puck. I am curious if there is software that preloads maps onto an SD card like Tom Tom for example, not software that streams the map via EV-DO...any software like this for the Bberry?

Gibber9583 - Currently, there are no applications for the BB that retrieve map data from the SD card, although supposedly some are in the works. There was a free trial for Mapquest Navigator that you should try out (search for it). The application downloads map data for your entire route ahead of time -- thus, it will be able to keep up, no matter how fast you're going. I have had the same experience with Telenav 5.1.029 so far -- it kept up with me going 80 on the highway no problem. I know that you can't get Telenav through verizon, but is it possible to get it directly from Telenav? Give it a try. I know $10 a month is a lot to spend, but it's not too bad compared with $200-300 for a PND.

I was afraid of that..... Unfortunately TeleNav is not available for VZW users... I wonder why there are no GPS applications that pull from the SD slot for BBerry? Not enough processing power? I certainly have no idea..but would love Tom Tom on my BBerry

Well, neither does the OP, since they were quite clear that they were referring to a puck, and not talking about the Internal GPS.
I still don't think you've read the original post correctly.

@Penguin,

I just ignored his 2nd post entirely since it was no longer worth the effort in trying to make him/her understand my original post.

I'm not sure this is correct.
Go to TeleNav - Always find your way!, click on buy now, select verizon as carrier and 8703 as device (deselect the puck, as you already have one), and purchase.

I would think that if it works on the 8703, it also should work on your 8830.

Gibber, to the best of my knowledge, nobody has yet released a GPS app for the Bberry 8800/8830 that pre-caches/stores the maps on the SD card. I have read a few posts that seem to indicate that one is coming, and I've even seen mention that Garmin is considering releasing some of their maps in BBerry format with an app to use the on-board GPS of the 8800 or a puck for other Bberries. But as of right now, I dont' think any exist for sale.

There are a couple of programs out there that pre-load topo maps I believe. But those are mainly for recreational use (boating, geocaching, etc).

And while I can also attest that Telenav seems to keep up pretty well with fast speeds while driving, I'm not sure it pre-caches maps in case you travel outside of EVDO or the slower NationalAccess (about 36K) range.

Based on this: Garmin International - Press Release and this: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=6302 it looks like Garmin won't be releasing anything on micro-sd/sd card. They are going the subscription-route. There are too many pages to sort through on their site to figure out the pricing quickly.

This is what I did just yesterday for my T-MO serviced Cingular unlocked 8800. They didnt have the 8800 to select so I just put in Cingular as my carrier (when its not) my phone number and pin and shabammmmm...

Telenav is the $hit! I use it while walking around my house LOL... J/P

It just hasn't been done yet. I'm sure one challenge is fitting the necessary data onto the card considering that a lot of us are stuck with a 2GB limit. I guess a vendor could release multiple map cards but it just hasn't been done yet.

Well, it was one of several that I thought of. It's pretty rare that new questions pop up around here...

Well, it can be done on a PPC which is why I was asking. Map of the entire US takes up less than 1GB, and the Tom Tom app was sub 2MB.

One can only hope that it makes its way to BBerry....Maybe I will give TeleNav a shot though...

I currently use Telenav with my 8830 and it works like a charm for me. It seems to cache far enough ahead to keep up.
