I have no idea why this is so, and others don't seem to be experiencing the problem.

Updating...and downgrading...my appraisal of phone call quality: still unusable. I just had a call and noticed the quality deteriorating to the point where I had to hang up, switch to EDGE, and call back.
The effect is that, as the call goes on, the caller's voice sounds increasingly "twangy", almost as if accompanied by a jew's harp, until that twangy sound swallows up the voice and it becomes unintelligible.
Note that I'm pretty sure this isn't a hardware issue, because this is a replacement handset (due to camera failure), and I had exactly the same problem on the previous one.
Is there a way to use WiFi for data but not for calls?

Not long. I'm not one to chat on the phone for long; I use the BB's data features far more than I use it for calls. I'd say the calls start to become unintelligible after a minute or two. And, as I mentioned, the same thing plagued my previous handset with .238 and .411. In fact, I now keep WiFi turned off unless I'm going to use Pandora or something like that--and for the most part Pandora works just fine on EDGE anyway.
I don't get a lot of calls, but it's a nuisance to have to switch to EDGE in mid-call.

Shrinking file fee memory
I've noticed another quirk with 5.0.0.641. My available "File Free" memory seems to be shrinking. That is, when I first installed it, I'd have about 122 MB after reboot. Now I have about 115 MB after reboot. That's after clearing sent messages, saved messages, and event log. I haven't installed any new software.

Same. All my calls are less than 5 min (usually.. sometimes ill be on the phone for a few hours!) and i have yet to notice this twangy phenomenon or any cal degradation.
in fact, making calls over UMA is always such a pleasure because i have an extremely fast connection (1-10 mB per second upload!)
are you *sure* this isint some sort of network issue (possibly your service provider is filtering / modifying IpSec or VPN traffic?)

Mine went from 112MB to 120MB free after the upgrade, reboot'd it a few times and file size is unchanged.

Yeah... mine went up initially too!
but keep your phone on for a couple of days (and downlaod an app from the app world)
your number should come back down.
i think this is caused by the fact that for every app i have installed, i also have an archived version (i didnt do this, app world must have...)
but i have poynt and poynt archive in my downloads application folder. this is true of practically every other app i have installed (about 17)
oh well, its not that big of a deal (still have plenty of memory!) its just an annoying bug.

Options -> Wi-Fi -> Enable single profile scanning
As far as I can tell, enabling this lets you manually choose a single Wi-Fi profile to connect to rather than automatically scanning based on your priority order.

How would I make sure of this?
The problem continued during a change of ISPs. I had AT&T DSL for years, and had no problem with UMA until I installed OS 5.x. Then I switched to FiOS and the problem continued. Then I got a replacement handset, and it continued. So, ISP changed; hardware changed. What remained constant is OS 5, and my other installed software, pretty much. I did get rid of Live Search, but that had no effect.

That's correct, You are locked into that profile even if any of your preferred/saved profiles are in the area.

I posted this as an issue earlier in the thread. Would like to hear from anyone who is able to automatically connect to their various wi-fi networks.
This has been my biggest gripe with 5.0.0.461, but it's been well worth the tradoff to have significantly better battery life on calls from 5.0.0.411.

Been running 5.0.0.411 and I noticed that very often the phone doesn't connect to edge and sits at GSM. Anyone else noticed this as well?

I have 5.0.0.411 and thinking about upgrading. WIFI works great now and it automatically works on both the network in my office building as well as my home network. If that is disabled then I definitely will wait on another update...

I went from .411 to this .760 and downgraded just a couple hours later. The lock key problem, problems with synching and problems with wifi connection meant it was in easy decision to quickly reinstall the .411
I will wait for the next one.
