does this work off road? I do some nature photography usually within 2 - 3
miles of asphalt but many times there are no real "roads" will this mark/save
locations, direct you back to your car etc..................or is this only for driving on paved roads.

It does not have trails or dirt paths on it, if that is what you are asking.
However, you could set a waypoint at your point of departure and TN will direct you back via an arrow to that point. Does that make sense?

Honestly thinking, Google Maps might be better for that purpose since it can use the hybrid satellite image maps, which would be of more use to use off-road.

Let's see what others might suggest.

I will look into google as you suggest. I don't care about the trails and dirt roads I only want to be able to;
1) "save" points so that I can easily find my way back and
2) save the point where I parked so I can go kinda directly back without retracing a very undirect route...........I often hike in various directions but then when I'm done I'm done and would like help with a ditrect route back to the car.............

I wonder if BBTracker would work for this, it makes a track of your path, and you could retrace your steps. Look at the Sticky at the top of this GPS section.

I have used it, not for hiking.

I have been looking at Spot for Blackberry, but I am not sure about "marking waypoints" as I haven't tried that yet. That might work.

It works for me. Importing and exporting waypoints is also good. Even though they could support more formats besides .LOC and .GPX.
