Default Sametime on BES

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I have landed the role of BB support and need lolts of help, so please be patient (also 'cos I'm an old guy).

They have tasked me to get Sametime on the BES and the Blackberrys. Is trhere a gude or a step by step. The dummies guide to Sametime for Blackberry would be a good startying point.

Do I need to reconfigure the BES?
How do I roll out the Client to the Blackberry?
Where can I find good quality help for this?

Regards

Tom

1. What version of BES do you have?
2. Is the Collaboration Service installed? (if not you will need to do this)
3. Do you have admin rights over the sametime environment? (you will need this, a minor amendment to ST config is needed for BES)

On top of jadey's points, you'll need to have full SameTime client licenses for the BlackBerry clients - the SameTime limited that comes with Domino do not cover mobile clients.

True, but if he has limited SameTime he can still use the free RIM client at BlackBerry - BlackBerry Enterprise Instant Messaging

Item #1, Jadey. "You must have a full IBM Lotus Sametime licence and an IBM Lotus Sametime user name."

Hmmmm. I don't pretend to fully understand Domino licensing. Does the limited SameTime, shipped with a domino enterprise server, not allow this then?
It would make sense that if you license the full SameTime collaboration server with all the bells and whistles, you would want the domino client. But just for standard SameTime IM, which (I understood to be) a basic component of Domino Server, the RIM client is OK?

Basically I am basing this on the assumption that a properly licensed Domino Enterprise server includes a "basic" SameTime server license (IM only, not all the web meeting and file sharing stuff), and by that virtue, you can use the (basic) RIM client as it only provides IM really. I also base this understanding on the fact that I have no idea what RIM regard a "full" ST license to be, and also that they specifically state for ST versions 3 through 7. Was there a significant licensing change regarding Domino and ST in 7.5 upwards?
I could be totally wrong on all of this!

Default Notes client license is enough to use EM on BB

If your organization has sufficient licenses for the Notes client, then you are permitted to use the Enterprise Messenger on BlackBerry.

This does not include the separate license needed if you want to use the separate SameTime Connect client (meetings and such).

I've had this conversation with my IBM rep and there's still a lot of it I don't get, but what I understand is this:

If you have Lotus Notes client licenses under a Collaboration Express agreement, you can build as many Domino servers (including basic SameTime services) as you want provided you do not use any Enterprise services, e.g. clustering.

You can use the limited SameTime client embedded with Notes as much as you want, up to however many Notes licenses you have. However, if you want to use the stand-alone SameTime client, or have remote clients such as BlackBerries or other smartphones that use SameTime, you must have full SameTime client licenses for each of those type of client.

I am not an IBM rep, nor a reseller, so YMMV-IANAL-your acronym here-this space for rent.

Default Sametime setup in Blackberry Manager

I can't seem to find the details for setting up Sametime access in the BES Blackberry Manager app. I know I need to create a rule but not sure how.

Can anyone help or provide a link? The Sametime doc on this is pretty thin, at least the one I could find.

Thanks,

- Richard

Do you happen to have the collaboration service installed?

I'd use the Server Configuration window (From STart -> Programs -> BES) and use the Collaboration tab to set the SameTime server.

No, it's not installed. I only recently installed Sametime and didn't know I'd need it. I've read a reinstall will take care of it usually without problems?

D'oh...we don't have Enterprise server, we have the freebie BPS. Any chance Sametime will run with it?

Unfortunately not, it's one of the few big differences and was what stopped us going from a Small Business to Professional when we hit the 10 licence limit we initially had with SBE. Meant we upgraded to full Enterprise.

RPRWyatt has a good pdf with steps on what you need to do. It includes info on device, bes and Sametime server config.
