A nice piece! I personally hope he never reveals his (their?) true identity...adds to the mystique...

I thought it was a really poor interview. Typical BG playing the big "I am" and BlackBerry Cool seemed to be doting on his every word, I felt it showed a bias attitude.

All BG has ever done is leaked some new device info, and because of that so many people assume he's some industry expert, and yet the interview shows he clearly knows nothing - the Pearl being the "downfall of RIM" - come on!!!! I really hope someone slaps a lawsuit on him that sticks!

BBAdmin, thanks for the notes.
Sure, we think BG is pretty high on himself - he knows he's high on himself. But we get excited about new BlackBerry news and have our own opinions - Boy Genius just happened to be mirroring them from time to time. Either way, at least some news got out, people are excited, that's that. No need to justify ourselves one way or the other.

I have to agree. He revealed nothing and came across as a pompous ass. What the hell is his claim to fame anyway?

You have to remember that this is stirred up by individuals that feed off of this type of information. Most of the members on here, and they come and go, are always very impatient about their blackberrys and any information they can get on them. I have seen plenty of members on here that cancel their accounts with a provider (or threaten to cancel) because they have to wait 2-3 weeks for a new BB to release. It just doesnt make sense.

Now, you have a person like BG who relases information on the newest devices before information is suppose to be out. What happens??? Instant fame. Sure...if anyone person on here released information on the regular basis before it was supposed to be out and it involved a new BB with pics and all that jazz, that person would be famous too. Just the way the dice roll. BG has done nothing impressive in my mind.

where would you guys be without the leaks and other information that blogs/boy genius/other sources provide?

it's like celebrity culture - you don't NEED to know what's going on with, say, Lindsay Lohan, but you want to (I personally don't, this was just for sake of example). You've immersed yourself so much into the BlackBerry culture that you love every little nook and crannie that comes along with it.

We bring you news you can use, I guess, is the bottom line. Boy Genius helps it along, and he can make our job easier and harder at the same time, but nevertheless, he's a source, and we get our news from him just like any other.

BG is a gadget enthusiast who's been able to get a toe into the back door of a fairly tight-lipped, NDA-suppressed industry. It's really as simple as him having an audience and him providing entertainment, information, etc. to those persons. Some close to the industry or operating within the industry may not like his tactics or what he's reporting, but this has been going on longer than any of us were even born and will continue on and on until whenever. He's one of about 2-3 people who have gained recent notoriety in this particular niche market of news, so he is among the 'elite' if you will. The attitude he carries is nothing more than youthful confidence. Honestly, there are more points to argue than him being pompous.

Anyhow, I'd like to say 'thanks' to Steve for providing the interview and article.

...objectively looking at the industry of leaking information that is typically confidential, do we think it best to protect an industry (a faceless entity) or consumer interest? I don't want to plan on getting a new device when a newer one is being released next week and the former being EOL'd within 2 months of the latter's launch. No offense to the cellular device market, but with the abundance of devices being released (RIM has started picking up the pace as well), these sort of leaks are almost welcomed and encouraged in the day and age of 10 second device life cycles. If the industry wants it to change, start focusing more on R&D and QA to develop a quality product rather than focusing on quantity (not focused at RIM but rather the Motorolas and Nokias and LGs and Samsungs of the industry).

^^ yeah, ya know.

It wasnt a bad interview. Lots of fluff but that is the nature of the thing. More information will come in time and I am glad to read previews like this in the mean time.

I have a feeling their 9xxx device will be HSDPA enabled. There is a HSDPA enabled BB due for release mid 2007 so the timing is right.
