Exchange doesn't route the mail to DNS.

DNS just tells Exchange (and other MTA's) where to attempt delivery if it hasn't been told otherwise.

You can do smartrelay with sendmail and postfix; so you have a mail exchange handing incoming and outgoing email on the perimeter of your network. You do your content scanning or spam filtering there, and then relay mail back to your Exchange server for delivery to mailboxes.

Then, you can tell Exchange to do the same for outgoing mail - use the SMTP relay outside to handle outbound mail.

Then you can focus on performance of your Exchange server as a repository instead of managing insane queues on something like Windows. You're effectively offloading the SMTP duties onto something else that is better qualified for it.

Safer because you're not putting your Exchange server directly in contact with the Internet.

Worms and other malware can't attack what they can't reach.

Offloading SMTP duties to another relay will increase the performance of exchange because it will not be spending any time managing queues or email delivery. Other MTA's do it better with less hardware - and a lot more options for mail filtering exist for things other than Windows.

Kind of.

Any device in DNS can have MX records.

Usually an organization will have their Exchange/Notes/Whatever-ware server as the MX; but using another relay just means you can point all incoming email to that device, which is then configured to accept mail, filter it, and kick it back to your Whatever-ware.

But I'll be happy to answer again:

T-Mobile hasn't invested "so much" in the BlackBerry - certainly not more or less than any other operator. Infrastructure costs for the operators are probably identical across the board.

T-Mobile would be foolish to not fully support Microsoft ActiveSync devices immeadiatly - it requires NOTHING on their end to support these devices short of the data service that they already have.

The devices themselves communicate directly to the organization that issues or maintains them - so there is no "middle man" such as RIM getting involved.

It would generate more revenue for T-Mobile and the like to push these devices on the users because there is zero cost associated with letting customers use them - no infrastructure allocated only for them.

I think it's awesome! Great design like a BB 7100 series blended with Moto's styling. Man, if GoodLink comes out with their Push email for Lotus Notes I would be all over that Moto. Just hope they don't overprice it.

And WHY did MobileBurn have pics comparing Q to the non-7100 model BB? That's stupid!

I think it looks great and the thinness makes it real easy to slip in a shirt pocket without having this heavy bulge hanging out. The screen size is the same as a BB7100 turned sideways so it should be quite usable. Biggest issue is width and tighness of keys but it is better than Treo in that regards.

Yes, anyone that thinks this won't impact RIM sales needs to take another look. Obviously the stock market has figured it out if RIM shares dropped 5% and Motorola shares went up 3%.

Elektron will have to offer more than just EDGE in a 7290 package to compete. Even the HP HW6500 series is going to have an impact if the positive feedback on the various web sites proves accurate over time.

The other thing RIM has going is outstanding durability. I've had a PPC phone and a treo, and while they were good for me they were way too frail for the general audience.

That being said it looks like a very exciting new device.

...GoodLink did by out JP Mobile, who already offers push email services for Groupwise and Notes.
