Has anyone figured out what the difference is with the new 64kb SIM and why I should switch from my old 32kb AT&T card (which I'm using and works fine)???

Only thing I can think of is that you'd be able to hold more contacts with the bigger sim.

I was under the impression that the BB does not store contacts on the SIM, I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure it doesn't.

You have the option of saving them to the SIM I think. Not the default but you can.

You should be aware that the SIM cards are not 32 and 64 MB (megabytes), but 32 and 64 KB (kilobytes) -- quite a huge difference there. If we had 64MB SIMs we could store ringtones and some music on them :D

I know when I replaced my broken 7290 last month and put the old sim in the new 7290, there was nothing on it, no contacts, no nothing that I could see. I had to start over, so I am not sure what the sim is for at all?

The SIM -- which stands for Subscriber Identity Module -- identifies your phone to the GSM network. It is uniquely connected to your account with your carrier. Without it, a GSM phone doesn't do anything. That's what the SIM is for.

Storing your contacts to the SIM is kind of a "side bonus." It is extremely limited. There can only be one-to-one storage -- that is, it is just

Name: number
Name: number
Name: number

You can't store multiple numbers, let alone tons of information like the BB can, for each name. You shouldn't ever, ever rely on your SIM to save contact information except in case of emergencies. You should have synced up your new BB with the Desktop Manager, and that would have put all of your contacts back on the device.

A good reason to save the some contact info to the sim is if you pop it into another phone then you at least have some phone numbers....

A 64K SIM will allow Cingular (orange only) to tell your phone which of the two networks (orange or blue) it should prefer. As a result, your ENS enabled phone can be put on the strongest of the two networks, therefore giving your phone better signal. 64k SIMs do nothing for legacy ATT (blue) users.

Also another difference we noted from another thread was that the new 64k SIM does not allow you to request 'Delivery Reports' for SMS messages. Not a deal breaker, but a very handy/cool feature when it is enabled.
