Hi,

I am playing around with setting up my 7105 to be a tethered modem for my laptop. I have looked through the thread at 2019-user-howto-use-blackberry-modem-laptop.html (can not paste link) and found it to provide great instructions. On my desktop computer it sets up the Standard Modem as described. On my laptop the install of the Desktop Manager does not setup the Standard Modem. It only shows the internal 56k phone modem and not the Standard Modem for the BB. I have reinstalled the Desktop Manager software several times with no luck. Can the Standard Modem be setup manually or am I just out of luck? Any help would be much appreciated.

Ok, I have played around some more and noticed that I can actually get my 7105 to work as a modem on my desktop computer. So if I can get a Standard Modem setup on my laptop I should be able to make it work. I noticed on my laptop that the RIM Virtual Serial Ports are setup on COM4 and COM5, but the software install will not setup the Standard Modem. I think it may have to due with the fact that the laptop has a 56k modem built in and that is somehow stopping it from creating the Standard Modem, but that seems a little strange. If anyone could provide any help that would be great.

when you say you have reinstalled; did you do a repair? i had the same problem on my laptop - missing standard modem. and i have a built in modem as well. when i did a reinstall of the desktop software, however, i chose repair. this added the standard modem back.

I am assuming you mean a repair of the BB Desktop Manager software and not Windows XP. I tried that early on, but it did not add it back. I thought it would, but no luck for me. Glad to hear that it worked for you. Since playing around some more, it is probably worth a try again. Thanks.

I am still trying to resolve this problem, but have had no luck so far. I have tried a few things in the registry, but I can not seem to locate where the list of Standard modems resides. I am assuming there is a registry option/key to allow the drivers to be used. Any ideas?

I was having the same problem until I stumbled across an article in the Knowledge Base on BlackBerry.com that gives instructions for loading the standard modem driver. (You can find the article by searching for "standard modem" in the Technical Knowledge Base.)

In a nutshell, you'll need to extract the standard modem drivers from your XP install. It's probably mirrored on your hard drive in the i386 directory. Find a file called mdmgen.in_ and rename it mdmgen.cab. Open mdmgen.cab and you'll find mdmgen.inf. Copy it to the windows\inf directory or some other suitable location. You can manually add the modem (using "have disk" and pointing to the location of mdmgen.inf) or repair your installation of Desktop Manager and DM should install the modem for you.

Thanks for the reply. Believe it or not my IT guy stumbled on the same solution a couple of days before your post. It worked great. He just sent me the file to try. Good to know how to get the file if I ever need it again.
