Default Browser works but BBM does not.. unlocked improperly? please help!

Please Login to Remove!

Phone: Bold 9000
Carrier: Rogers
Status: Unlocked
Version: .190

I recently bought a 3 week old Bold off of craigslist. I got my SIM in there and everything works great except for BBM. I cannot add any contacts to my contact list which has 0 contacts. It just shows contacts pending. The browser works fine.

I called Tech support a number of times. Re/re the whole phone, battery pulls etc.. i re/re bbm as well. Still not working.

I contacted tech support again to ask for more assistance. This guy said the phone is probably stolen or else it is unlocked improperly. Now this is the first unlocked phone I have ever had but I have never heard this and I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on this.

He suggested that I go and get it unlocked again (properly). I do not know how to unlock any phones. I also don't care that this phone is unlocked because I am a rogers customer anyway.

For the record I also have a fido contract and I put my fido sim card in there and it worked fine (could make phone calls) so as far as the physical abilities of an unlocked device is concerned i think the unlock part of this phone is fine but I could be wrong still.

I was just hoping/ wondering if anyone had any feedback on this issue because this phone is useless to me without berry messenger. Any help or advice would really be appreciated!

Thanks

ps. I will have my eyes glued to this thread if anyone has any additional questions about my situation. thanks again.

Is the version 4.6.0.190 or 5....190? Cause if it 5...., then you should downgrade to a fully released version of an os which is stickied at the top of the forum because 5.0 is in beta.

also, check this out:

I also followed the unlocking link you send and all are disabled! so we're good there I guess.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Most important question is -- do you have a Blackberry Data plan? Without a BB data plan, there is nothing you or anyone else can do to make BBM work.

Well it seems he has a data plan cause the browser and everything else worked and he didn't say anything about wifi. BTW sorry about the double post.

I just spoke to rogers tech support again. I called first to confirm I still had a data plan and the answer is yes. (this is like my 8th blackberry and 3rd bold in 3 months due to theft/ lost). I talked to the guy he said he would reset my data plan and maybe that would put on me onthe proper network. he said my apn's were fine. so in a couple mins im gonna throw the battery back in like he suggested and then see whats happening.

It didnt work. I noticed though that I cannot setup an email account on this phone. Normally I would be able to setup numerous gmail accounts for example. When I go to setup wizard and choose setup email it only allows me to access a BES email account. Normally I believe at this point you would be able to select personal account.

I do not have a BES account.

Did the person you bought the bold from have his own BIS account or BES account. If so, tell him to release the pin.

Just got off the phone with them again. he says because the phone is unlocked you cannot access bbm anymore. he says when i go to host routing table and register now something should come up and mine phone doesnt. and because of this its screwed up. so basically i have to sell this phone and find a locked version? i somehow find this hard to believe since there are many unlocked blackberrys out there and i dont think many would choose one if u meant sacrificing bbm. but who knows.

I am not sure I totally buy the argument. It is very possible that when the previous owner unlocked the phone that they screwed it up somehow... but I have 4 unlocked BlackBerry devices (2 Bolds, 1 Curve 8310 and one Pearl 8100) on my family plan and ALL have BBM and have no issues with it or any app. I have had other unlocked BB devices prior to the current set of devices... and no issues with BBM not working.

I know, I don't really buy it either. I think he just wanted to get me off the phone so when he asked if it was unlocked and I said yes he was quick to make that conclusion. I asked them if there was anything else we could try and he said no and that the problem won't be fixed because it's unlocked.

I should have lied and said it was locked to Rogers lol.

Like I have mentioned before I have owned many Blackberrys. a bunch of 8300's, an 8310, a pearl and a few 9000's and i've never experienced any problem like this before.

I just got off the phone with the previous owner and he never had data setup for this phone and he was also using Fido. So he knew nothing about bbm working or not. I mentioned before he only owned this phone for a few weeks (the phone is in mint condition) before he switched to an iPhone. He said that i have to get the PIN registered but I dont even know what he is talking about.

This is really crappy. I just put the phone on CL and hopefully will sell it for the same price I bought it for and i'll just try another Bold. I really have no idea what else I can do at this point.

Unless of course you guys have any other ideas.

Have you logged into your Rogers BIS webpage, input the device IMEI and PIN, and sent service books?

There is no way that is possible. Try checking it again.
