i am having the same issue...hoping for a third party media player app sometime soon (vlc perhaps?)

List of supported media formats and video & audio codecs are available from RIM.

Google Blackberry deliverables 27267 and you'll find a pdf of what codecs are support within which container types. (I'd post the link but not enough posts yet)

Use Mediainfo from Sourceforge to determine if your files are compatible or require a conversion.
