Default Tether for BlackBerry --- will you get charged on your phone bill?

Please Login to Remove!

Away from my PC, so I had some trouble searching. TV/internet is out at my house right now, and it could be a week or more to get it back. A friend told me about the app Tether. It's really simple: download an app to your phone, download a program on your PC, hook up via USB or Bluetooth, and that's it. I tried it last night and it worked great. My only question is whether additional data charges will show up on my Verizon bill. Is there some kind of data limit that I should be aware of if I'm tethering? I have an "unlimited" plan, but just want to be sure I'm not missing something.

Check the fine print for that unlimited plan - it may be capped somewhere - and then you would be charged per KB.

Verizon requires a tether plan, so if you get caught without one, you will get the bill and have one added.

ditto what has been said...it seems that if you truly have the "unlimited" plan from VZW and are setup for tethering, the limit on downloads is 5gb....

Tether's software is suppose to make the data access appear as if it were coming from the phone itself rather than an "IP Modem" mode that you'd get if you used DialUp or BB Desktop Manager so in that respect, your data access is stealthy hidden and you should not be billed or metered at the Verizon tether plan rates.

HOWEVER, if you go nuts and eat allot of bandwidth on a monthly basis by being tethered to your notebook this may send a red flag. VZW could notice and investigate that you are hitting non-phone related data access's and deem that you violated the terms of service.

I think you will be fine as long as you use Tether in moderation and not as a primary source of Internet for your computer.

Default One-Day Sale for Tether (Thurs. 23 Sept.)

Tether is on sale today for half price: $24.98 vs the normal $49.95. Lots of folks have been waiting for something like this. It's over at www.Mobihand.com

Interesting question. Since the BlackPad won't be a stand-alone device, perhaps it will need to be paired with an individual BlackBerry for authentication.

In any case the carriers can expect to see BlackBerry data usage jump. RIM must have agreements with all the carriers about this already in place. At least I hope they do!
