Is it possible to disable the alert when you get new email messages. For instance, is there a way I can make it so my phone still vibrates/rings when I get a phone call or text message, but not when I receive a new email? thanks

Yup, just modify your profile.

Just go to profiles -> scroll to advanced at the bottom -> select your active profile -> and this will give you a list of everything you can modify. If your using BIS just got down to the email address that you want to change the notification and modify it.
