I was able to connect last week, but now I keep getting the following message:

error trying to connect to irc server aborting.. Exception Bad DNS Address

I haven't changed any settings on my blackberry. I've tried several different servers including the one I was able to use last week, and the one mentioend by DavidE above, but nothing.

Any ideas?

Where can I get a compatible IRC program to use on my 7105t? I miss using IRC and want to meet more BlackBerry users who have IRC.

I got jmIrc to load but it's asking for a proxy server and password. I'm not on a BES. I have OS 4.1 installed on my 7105t.

On my non-BES T-Mobile 7290, I leave the proxy server and password blank. On your BlackBerry, is the box labeled "Use HTTP proxy server" checked or unchecked (it's one of the "HTTP Config" settings in jmIrc)? I leave it unchecked.

Erica what version of jmirc are you using? My understanding is that newer versions will not work with BBS and what you need to use is this:

Name: jmIrc Version: 0.92

I have included it here if you care to try it.

First time BB user with a 8700g on T-mobile. Just installed jmIrc .95. When I attempt to connect using the default stock profile :

port 6667
server irc.us.ircnet.net

I get error: Error trying to connect to IRC server - exception could not open tunnel - failed.

Just to test this:
Do I need to make any changes to my configuration? the default profile? Can somebody recommend a profile that will work?

Update on my own post:

I currently have the device working as a tethered modem.. On that connection right as a matter a fact.

For mIrc I read somewhere I should set home>options>advance>TCP>apn to wap.voicestream.com .. so I did.. and now I get an error about

"BAD DNS ADDRESS"

Thanks for any help!

JMIRC works fine out of the box for Rogers users.. no extra configuration reuired..

you might want to have your provider re-set your profile (this requires you call customer support)

"I get error: Error trying to connect to IRC server - exception could not open tunnel - failed.
"

this indicates that your tcp/ip sockets are not working. Do other tcp/ip applications work? (try MIDPSSH, http://xk72.com/midpssh)

I needed to reboot after making the DNS change... jmIrc .95 appears to be working great.

perhaps I spoke to soon. Maybe I did not need to even make the change to TCP>APN as I now notice I can't tether and mirc at the same time from the handheld and that might have been the reason.. like I would ever need to anyways.

Anyways, maybe it's that I don't know how to use the ap, but now that it connects it automatically joins the channel and tells me 14 people are connected... great, but when I send a message I don't see it in the dialog box (only see a greater than sign) .. nor do I see any messages posted by anybody else..

Default In Wont of Another IRC Client for BlackBerry 8700c

I currently use jmIrc for all of my BB IRC desires, but I am far from ecstatic about it. It's a good program, but it lacks what the Palm IRC client--upIrc--and others like it have: A text box for input in the main channel pane.

All the java midlets for IRC that I've tested have this limitation. Does anyone know of an IRC client for BlackBerry (J2ME based or other) that has this function?

Let me add that I would be happy to assist a programmer in the development of such a program.

If anyone can help me or is interested, please contact Stephen at [email address] . I would be happy to discuss something with you.

Warm regards,
Stephen Brown

Anyone still listening to this thread? For those of you who have JMIRC working -- are you on BES?

If you get disconnected often, are you on BES?

I just installed my first BES server and I have the disconnect issue. I have one other friend that has the same problem. Cadeucsb seems to also have the same problem, i suspect this person is also on BES>.

Previously, i was on BWC/BIS... and it worked flawlessly ..

I have it working, and I'm not on BES. I'm hardly ever disconnected.

Cool - that's two BIS working -- any BES users? I have a ticket open with RIM support on this issue (hi guys! - they are watching) hoping to find out what causes the difference between the two..

I am not on BES, my BB is strictly personal use (i just use hotmail and forward my pop mail) .. but yes, jmirc disconnects ALL THE TIME and sometimes it looks like its connected til i type a msg, then it disconnects and could have been disconnected for hours.

Its a similar problem to Antb's problem, no problem if im active...but its when i go idle that it drops.. even if for a short time and some days it stays connected, but usually doesnt.
