Default Verizon SMS changes?

Please Login to Remove!

i heard about a week ago that verizon was going to stop displaying the "D" for delivery confirmations on sent text messages and sure enough... as of late last night it doesnt happen for me anymore. confirmed with other vzw people also. havent tested but i assume this is for MMS also. PIN messages and BB messenger dont appear to be affected.

Yes you are correct. This stinks it was one good way when I sent my kids a text and they said they didn't get it.

I'm just wondering why they did this, is it cheaper for the service.

nah im thinking its a privacy issue. it confirms that someone got your message, letting people know theres a real person behind the number. same reason most email software now doesnt display inline images by default... it allows a spammer to know youre actually there once you display the image and it downloads from their server.

just my thought... could be wrong

It would be nice on a family plan though.

It would be even better if they allowed the device-holder to make the decision, as to whether or not to allow the confirmation to be sent, and still better if you could be selective about who gets a confirmation. I've already got people complaining about it. They think it's limited to only them.

yup, definitely. IF they did in fact disable this "for our benefit", we should be able to have the choice to use it or not. for now im sending only via MMS... we'll see how long it lasts

I sent an SMS text this morning. It still shows the "D".

What I have noticed since I bought my Curve (in May) is that it only shows the "D" for "in network" SMS messages.

I just sent another one to my other phone right next to me and it no longer shows the D.

I just sent a test message to my friend (on the Verizon network). It shows the "D".

Maybe it's a certain area.

Or perhaps it's a staged roll-in

The word on the street (other forums) is that this is being phased out by region, so depending on where you are, it may or may not work, but is expected to be phased out by the end of September, 2008. The same "street" has it that these confirmations generate too much network traffic - one confirmation message for each message sent by a user.

I, for one, will be sorry to see it go, and knowing it will get me nowhere, will still call support and report the "problem" when it stops working for me.

Ask your girlfriend when VZW is going to release the latest VZ Navigator for the BB! I'm still anxiously waiting for it.

This will be phased out in regions and be completely shut down nationwide by the end of the month.
