Angry Why no WiFi?

Please Login to Remove!

There's been discussion in the past in this forum that the 8830 from Verizon was going to have WiFi. What's up with that? I see no WiFi capability in the specs from Blackberry or from Verizon. I'm thinking this is all smoke and no real substance here. Will there ever be a Blackberry with WiFi?

past discussion were facts, just rumors. I for one, would be shocked to find if the 8830 would have wifi.

Exclamation

"One key difference between the Verizon and Sprint versions of the new BlackBerry 8830 is that Sprint's will be "unlocked," enabling customers who take the device abroad to buy wireless service in other countries through other carriers. Verizon's 8830 is locked so that it can only be used overseas through Verizon's roaming service."

"Sprint, which won't start selling its 8830 until July, didn't disclose pricing. A spokeswoman said it will be competitive with Verizon's device"

Looks like I will be getting this on sprint rather than verizion since their gsm services will be unlocked.

Default More Info

Additional from PhoneScoop-dot-com:

RIM today announced the BlackBerry 8830, RIM's first device to combine CDMA technology with GSM for global roaming. The 8830 is also RIM's first CDMA device with the company's new generation of hardware, featuring a thin design (0.55 inches), four-way trackball navigation, and a microSD memory card slot. Both Verizon Wireless and Sprint will offer the phone. The 8830 provides EVDO high-speed data on CDMA networks and GPRS data on GSM 900 / 1800 networks overseas. Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, media player, and a large QVGA display round out the feature set. Verizon Wireless announced it will offer the 8830 starting May 14 for business customers. Sprint will launch the 8830 in July, offering it with unlocked GSM so customers can use cheaper SIM cards when traveling, or the included Sprint SIM card to keep their own phone number.

I think the Sprint device looks much better!!

Hmm,

GSM 900 / 1800 networks

Seems like it will not cannibalize sales of existing 8800's on this continent, smart but still limiting.

not locked alltoghether, just locked to gsm carriers of verizons choice

"xxx8226;The network auto-selection feature lets the 8830 search for the first available network, starting with whatever it was using last. If you are in the US, it will always use CDMA, but if you get off the plane at Heathrow and power it up, it will seek a CDMA network. Upon not finding one, it will see a GSM network. Needless to say, it will only roam on networksxxx8212;CDMA or GSMxxx8212;for which Verizon Wireless has a roaming deal. (Fun fact: Even though Korea mainly runs CDMA networks, Verizon phones will not roam on them.)"

I noticed that as well when I clicked around. It looks like just the splash page got the 8830 info.

I bet, that vzw will charge extra for gps like they do for everything else useful.

According to the press release on Sprint's web site, it is Rev 0.

Been lurking around here for awhile doing some research if I want to cave in and purchase a Blackberry for personal use (since WM and Palm has been utter failures for me). I have a wild feeling that Verizon will disable/cripple the GPS feature and RIM is hinting at this fact too now. The new link for the 8830 that's located here - BlackBerry 8830® Smartphone Wireless Handled Device | Sleek Design with High Performance Features | Global Roaming mentions to "Check with service provider for supported features and services." And it's in regards to GPS. Bleh.

Might have to leave Verizon after all. Yay for crippling features and completely locking out handsets.

I am hoping it will be upgradable to Rev A. The CDMA titan (the ppc-6800, p400 et all) will be. Hopefully RIM used one of the qualcom CDMA chips that supports Rev A and we will just need to wait for a software update once Rev A handsets are launched.

Sweet! I will be getting this on Sprint the day it's released! Glad to see Sprint didn't lock it like Verizon did...Verizon's reason is to "ensure the quality of the network." BS...more like "to ensure a revenue stream for us." I am also glad Sprint doesn't disable GPS, so I can continue using Mapquest like I do on my 8703e. Can't wait!

Ok, so if I'm not traveling overseas and don't have a preference for Verizon, is there any reason to wait for this device instead of getting the 8800 now from Cingular? Thanks.

Default teather to a mac

I was wondering if this device will be able to be used as a modem. I am using the 8703e and it does not have this functionality.

thanks

Marc

So what you are asking is: If I dont want the network it runs on and I wont be using its key feature should I still buy it?

Other differences between the Sprint/Verizon version and the Cingular version are:

-Vzw has high speed data (for web browsing and tethering)
-Vzw version is slightly taller
-vzw version is a nasty silver color
-Cingular version will have slightly better battery life

Huh? The 8703e does have tethering functionality. I use it on my Sprint 8703e all the time, as it's included in the BB plan. Verizon does offer it, but at an additional cost.

I don't see why not?! You have an internal memory card that may have photos, music, audio files etc on it right? so why should they limit your ability to send those over MMS for short data messaging instead of using email or some other portal network connection.?!?!???

Also, from SPrints site
Built-in Bluetooth® Wireless Technology (v. 2.0): When used with your Sprint PCS Phone and accessories, Bluetooth allows fast, secure transmission without cables or wires, even though the two devices are not in line-of-sight. Bluetooth wireless accessories sold separately. NOTE: This device does not support Bluetooth Dial-Up-Networking.

Bluetooth is CUT! ;)
