Default San Francisco - GPS results disappointing

Please Login to Remove!

I've never tried to use GPS actually in the heart of a major city before...I live and work in the 'burbs.

I was in SF this weekend and got pretty poor GPS results when out and about in the city. I use a Freedom Keychain 2000 puck w/my 8130 Pearl.

I was using it with Google Maps and WLS, and neither seemed to be able to get a fix reliably, or when it got a fix, maintain tracking on my position well.

Is that just normal for a city like SF (signal blocked by buildings), or ?

I have not tried mine in a dense urban jungle but it is not unusual since the buildings can both block and reflect/bounce signals all over the place. I have the same unit as you do and I was hoping that it rather sensitive gps chip would function in places like SF. Sometimes, if they get a good fix they can hold it so getting into the middle of an intersection with a better view of the sky can sometimes help. When I marched around Paris a few years back with my Garmin 76CS (older chip technology) I would lose signal even among their not so tall buildings but if I walked into a street I could get it back again for a bit.

I was in dowtown Houston TX last weekend among their many skyscrapers but didn't have any significant GPS problems. But I imagine you are correct with building deflection.

I first experienced this in Manhattan - it's a real phenomenon - there isn't enough clear line of sight sky view to pick up enough satellites to get a fix.

Thanks for the feedback...sounds like it's the nature of the beast. Good thing I didn't plan our weekend around using GPS to get around!

Yup -- you need line of sight to the GPS satellites.

Though I didn't have any problems with Telenav in downtown SF the times I've traveled there.
