its useless if you don't go overseas. if you're using it in the U.S. you can ONLY use it on vzw's network as you can't use any other GSM network in the states.

Agreed, but I would imagine that most people who buy the 8830 intend to travel with it. Otherwise, there's really little point in buying the phone in the first place.

Exactly -- Verizon is Verizon.

Pretty simple:
Verizon = crippled
!Verizon = !crippled

Which is why I won't use them regardless of the quality of their network. That said, they do seem to have excellent coverage in many places.

Solid Blackberry .. I'm waiting for the Curve .. the keyboard on this one seems a tad better then the Cingular model. It has a nice solid feel.

I hate the default theme .. as I like seeing the icons .. I'm running BB Dimension Icon right now and my own wallpaper. I'd post a screenshot but now of the capture utility seems to work!

You cannot use it on ANY GSM network in the US, period. Not an issue as I much prefer a CDMA network.
I purchased this phone for the sole reason that I travel overseas extremely frequently - if I didn't, I'd have been content with my 8703e

I wonder if it uses the true Sirfstar III gps chip that the 8800, and BT pucks, and newer car navigation systems use or if it uses the assisted qualcom GPS which is not as good and is what the 8703 has etc. I have a feeling it is the later.

Mine showed up today and I've been playing around with it a bit.

Those who are thinking of upgrading from 8703e, here is what I found that is new:

1. Option for seperate SMS & Email boxes
2. Video/Music player
3. microSD storage
4. GSM via SIM card
5. Voice dialing
6. Spell checking
7. Thinner

Here is what you lose:

1. Longer
2. It is very hard to remove the battery cover, at least it is for me.
3. Flimsy leather case (I guess this is a love it or hate it thing){It does turn the BB on and off}
4. Front convenience button

I found the keyboard a bit cramped but still very easy to type on. The case sometimes feels well made, other times it feels cheap. It's hard to describe. I swear the screen looks much better.

I only had my 8703e for a month and I'm already hunting for the side wheel. It takes some getting used to the trackball but overall I think it's better.

8830 is a keeper ;)

What do y'all think of the general quality of the OEM skin as compared to a Seidio or Body Glove Scuba Suit?
Thx.

I bought that case for my phone from the Cingular store for $15. I like it a lot. It gives it a better feel in my hand, like it won't slip out. Gives better grip for 1 handed texting and although it makes using the OEM holster a bit of a tighter fit I feel that its more secure and won't slip out. Plus is protecting it if I drop it. Now all I have to do is get a SZ screen protector and I should be good.

What exactly are the benefits of having it unlocked? Specifically, for Verizon, does that mean that all bluetooth profiles will work? ... and the GPS?

Not really. Many will buy it just because it's new.

That would be me! I travel very little out of the country. It's new, it's cool and I'm a little tired of my year old Q. I've never used a BlackBerry but everyone that I know that has one (including my 16 year old nephew) loves it and calls my Q a BlackBerry wanna-be! So I ordered one yesterday, and no, I do not have a Business account with Verizon, just a normal customer.

I ordered mine last night and expect to see it either Monday or Tuesday. It's shipped today supposedly with free fed ex! I got a few options, the leather case, car charger and blue tooth headphones. The only discount not shown on my bill is the 100 mail in rebate. Here's my bill:

Item Code..........Description......................Pri ce....Discount
RIM8830CAS......CAS:RIM BB8830 LTHR.....$24.99...$10.00

PRD-13790-001...RIM BB8830 GLBL PDA....$399.99 .$200.0
WAR6002...........1 YR. MFG. WARRANTY.....$0.00......$0.00
RIM8830GLOBPK SIM:RIM BB8830 GLOB....$39.99...$39.99
FEDEXSHP006.....FEDEX SAT BY 12PM........$19.99...$19.99

ORDER CHARGES:

Equipment Discount: $309.98
Shipping Charges: $0.00
Taxes: $15.90
Extended Warranty: $0.00

Total: $280.86

So with the phone for 399 and a automatic discount of 200, then the 100 mail in rebate they say will be in the box, that puts the phone at 99! I'm pretty excited! This will pop my BlackBerryCherry!

Default How about the (lack of) ringer volume?

I've had my 8830 for 5 days now, but I cannot raise the ringer volume despite using all the tricks. Any help? Could downloading a particular ringtone allow for a higher volume?

Is this $399 with all the discounts with a new line or contract extension? I ask, becuase I not eligible till 2009 for a upgrade, but the corporation I work for still shows as having corporate discounts with verizon. Could I call in and get the same deal for my personal line?

Depends. My contract still had 8 months left (up 12/07) but I was eligible for NE2 last December. I had a voice only plan with an LG phone.

The price was $399 for the 8830. Minus $100 for NE2. Minus another $100 for signing up for unlimited data. Total charged to credit card is ~$199. Plus there is another $100 mail in rebate, bringing the actual total price of the 8830 to only $99.

I was looking on eBay and watching brand new in box phones going for something like $700-$900 right now. I almost wanna sell it and make a profit.

I like it too much though.
