Just got off the phone with the rep. Basically I called the number listed on the Verizon Blackberry 8830 site. Waited on hold for about 2 minutes and just told her i want to upgrade from my 7130e to 8830.

The rep had no idea about the 28th release date so I didn't say anything. She said it would go out Monday and it could take up to 7 days shipping. So heres what i got:

Phone Cost: $499 (she quoted me thats retail)
Extend plan back out to 2 years: $399
New every two: $299
Unlimited Data Discount: $199
Mail in rebate $99

Then she told me it was $65 for Unlimited Data in US or $70 for International.
BUT I complained and I was like i currently pay $25 for 10 mb. Why is unlimited $65? So she looked it up and said actually its $45. From what I understand it used to be $45 for unlimited and with this new phone it went to $65? So did I make her make a mistake and charge me the old price?

Also I told her i work for a company with a large Verizon wireless contract. She directed me to the B2B website and apparently my any business with a decent size contract with Verizon get 10% off your monthly plan to all employees. So I applied it and i got 10% off my 1400 minute $80 dollar plan.

So this was and awesome call!

Default 8830 Gps Needs An External Receiver????

Just got the 8830, all the info in its help menu indicated that gps should work, but alas I need a bluetooth external receiver and this model has NO INTERNAL GPS RECEIVE...Spoke to berry, told me that the 8800 model has an internal gps - but of course, won't work when I'm in Europe.

Is this the case for others? If so, I'll probably return to the 8800 - seems to defeat the purpose if I have to have another device to use.

Thanks for your comments!

Smile Just got 8830!

I just got my new VZW 8830 yesterday. Price from Verizon was $115 after rebate and NE2 discount. My first impressions so far coming from an 8703e are pretty good. I am not totally sold on the track ball since it is hard to get used to not using your thumb on the side so much. It does work well and the music and video feature is cool. I loaded music to a 1GB MicroSD card and it all appears on the device and plays well.

Keys are a little closer together but I have fairly small fingers so not an issue. Display is bright and the phone seems to work well. I tried the voice activated dialing which so far I have not been able to use well. Might take some training on the phone...not sure.

I do wish the GPS worked! I use VZNavigator on my other cell and it is great. I would love to use that with Google Maps or Blackberry Maps which is linked to my address book!

I will post more as I experiment.

So, has anyone got the GPS piece working?

As a minimum can you pull up google maps or any map website and use that...even though it won't walk you through it?

On the memory card has anyone successfully used a 4gb. Sounds like it shoudl work with any 2gb but the new 4gb cards are a dif. technology... How is the phone quality?

Verizon has the internal GPS locked out on the 8830, as well as the 8703e.
It's not a matter of anyone "getting it working". It's disabled by the carrier.

Verizon will launch their own GPS solution for the 8830 in a month or two which will utilize the internal GPS.

I thought the $65 pertained to the unlimited international data plan, but the old $45 plan was still available for those of us who don't need the international plan?

Just do a data backup of your old device using the desktop application, then restore it to your new one. Very simple...

Most headphones are like that. Your supposed to put the device on one side of your body and the longer cord is for that side...the shorter side is just supposed to reach over to the other ear.

Can anyone scan the rebate form for me? They didn't include it in the box and the reps are clueless on it. It would be greatly appreciated.

It should be on the purchase receipt. I just got home with mines and they printed it out on the receipt and put it in the bag.

I just got home from waiting the usual 2 hours to get any sorta service from verizon, so I got a chance to play around with the demo unit. Was pretty impressed and once my 8830 charges I will see what this badboy can do. But they cluelessness of the reps was horrid at best:

1.) the salesperson was adament about the phone having GPS
2.) they didn't know where the micro SD slot was and almost broke the damn phone before it was even in my hands trying to snatch the battery out.
3.) A tech who I spoke with before I was purshasing the phone was behind the counter after I purchased as was like "this is the one with the camera right", the sales person agreed even after she turned it around and there was obviously no camera (WTH?)
4.) the creaking of the Cingular 8800 is also present on the 8830, atleast the demo did. But I did not notice it until I went looking for it and actually squeezed the phone to see if it would creak, otherwise it didn't. Will check my device once it charges tonight.

For the good points (actual phone)
1.) Keyboard is wonderful, the rubbery feel of the keys is much more pleasant than the hard plastic keys of the 8703e despite being bunched together.
2.) the 4.2 OS has alot of things fine tuned, like the menu key gives you the option to actual "close" out of every menu, unlike the 8703 where you either hit end or back to get out , ex. the options menu.
3.) the track ball is GREAT, coming from a treo and Q is it just as great as the d-pad for Windows Mobile phones.
4.) The verizon theme is actually great, I prefered it to the the dimension zen theme included on the phone.
5.) the blue backlight is not as unpleasant as most reported.
6.) voicedial.....RIGHT ON!

Phone should be fully charged in awhile, will report back if I find any new points good or bad.

I picked one up today, too. I have mixed feelings; I like the keyboard of the 8703e better, but the software, track ball, and thin profile make it worth the upgrade. I like the spell check that's built in, too. I don't care for the blue backlighting, but I've been typing on a BB qwerty long enough to know how w/o looking. There was another guy at the store there getting an 8830 at the same time I was. He was upgrading from the 7250.
