Talking Preventing Non-RIM devices from connecting to BES

Please Login to Remove!

Hi Folks.
We are running a BES 4.0 (soon to be 4.1) server with Exchange 2003. Our problem is that some users abroad have chosen to use the Nokia and other BES enabled devices for e-mail. As we have a policy that strictly forbids this, how can we enforce this policy.
NOTE> Seems that all RIM devices have PIN numbers starting with 2, Nokia seems to be 6 etc.
NOTE2> Yes, we know non-rim devices are sometimes easier and more convenient, but our Service Desk is small and cannot test/support all the devices out there, hence RIM only.

Pin numbers usually denote the network they are on. 2 is GSM, 3 is CDMA, 4 is iDEN and I think 1 is Mobitex or one of the other really old networks.

We had a user with a model that we didn't test or support (Sprint 7130) have problems and we tried for a little bit and finally told him to return it for a 7250, 7290 or 8700.

The user claimed that in the area of New Mexico that he was in, only Sprint worked.

I guess you can send out an e-mail to all the BES users letting them know that they have 2 months to switch to a supported device or they will have their account disabled.

theres a option in 4.1 BES to restrict which deviecs can b epu ton the BES.

either by a range of PIN or by manufactuer.

we set it to only allow RIM devices activate.

i believe its called the enterprise settings and its under the server properties.

long live the resistance.

As gziz mentioned, this is only available in BES 4.1. It is called the Enterprise Service Policy.

If all your RIM devices are at a 4.0 software level, you can switch the BES to use only AES keys. Currently the BB Connect devices only work with 3DES. If you don't allow 3DES the BB Connect devices won't work; however, any RIM handhelds with code older than 4.0 will still require 3DES too.
