Default Real GPS or cell tracking simulation...?

A pal tells me that very few cell phones have an actual GPS chip, that the tracking abilities are simply based on cell tower locations and signal strength, etc. Is this the case? Is it true of BlackBerry?

Your pal doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

Blackberries advertised with GPS has shown to me a position accuracy of less than 3 meters. That's better than many standalone GPS. That kind of precision is not possible with only cell tower triangulation.
Cell tower has only given me an accuracy of about 300 mts and when you are connected to a wifi router it can show your position within 100 mts.

Your friend doesn't know bupkus(sp)! He should take the time to know all the facts about devices. That may have been true with older BB models but is no longer applicable today.

It's true my pal doesn't know much about Blackberry, as he's not an owner, much less a fan. In general, he's more of a Mac guy....but I like him anyway.

I asked my question here because the RIM site [at least the parts I looked at] seemed vague on the subject. I appreciate everyone's quick response to my question...

I guess the message here is don't believe everything your friends tell you. Google Maps uses cell tower triangulation to locate you until the GPS on your handheld or car or whatever device locks on. Don't know if other Map apps use it however.

You will typically see your location shown between 1700 and 2500 meters using cell tower data and 4 to 10 meters using GPS.

If I had simply 'believed' my pal, I wouldn't have asked here for clarification... To be clear, I asked because I _didn't_ think he was right, but couldn't find a definitive answer on the subject.

If somebody could point me to a RIM or other website that describes, in detail, the BlackBerry's GPS hardware features and capability, I'd really appreciate it. Everything I have found so far is vague or equivocal [or in the case of of this posting thread, a little insulting]. I'd like something more than 'well, it BEHAVES the way a GPS should....'

So you don't trust us? Have you looked at the RIM website?

Check the specs for each device you are interested in. The Google the type GPS listed, i.e. A-GPS, and see what you find. Some BBs have GPS, some do not. The specs tell the story.

Where have you searched so far? We certainly don't want to send you someplace that you have already been to for information.

Have you looked at this? http://www.gps-practice-and-fun.com/a-gps.html

Or this? http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/gp..._tutorial.html
