T-Mobile drops calls - when switching to GSM?

I received a replacement 8700g from T-Mobile two weeks ago (old screen had died) and since then, my bberry routinely drops calls or doesn't allow me to make calls for 30 minutes or so. If I am on a call, the person on the other end can't hear me for about 5 seconds and then I get "call failed". After that, I get "call failed" as soon as I dial for about 30-60 minutes. I have been traveling a lot and this happens all over the country (including my home and office where I have had no problems making calls before). I have noticed that when EDGE is displayed, everything goes fine, but after the "call failed" message, the phone is always on GSM. It won't send or receive texts at this time either. Turning the phone off and on doesn't help nor does selecting the network manually. I have replaced the SIM and updated the S/W. Same behavior. I believe T-mobile is sending me another device, but I'm worried that I will still have the same problem. Does anyone believe this is hardware or is something weird happening between my data and voice services?
