Default I just remotely synced my Blackberry contacts WITHOUT A BES!

Please Login to Remove!

I have been playing around with SyncML for years now, this morning I was happy to come across the Sync4j project AND their Blackberry client.

I just successfully synced my contacts and calendar WITHOUT a BES!

Granted, it isn't push, so I have to initiate the syncing, but they also have an outlook client, a palm client, an IPOD client and a pocketPC client! They also have a demo of a web based PIM.

This is very promising!!!!!

Check out the Sync4j project on sourceforge!

How about a FAQ or some step by steps containing what you need and what you did? I am on BES for the job but would like to keep my home computer in syc with my laptop and BB. Can I wirelessly sync to two seperate sets of outlook contacts?

Do you have to be on exchange for this to work or will POP3/IMAP work just fine provided outlook is open?

I'm really surprised RIM haven't already done something like to compete with the forthcoming Windows/Exchange threat... I can see how it would cut into the BES market but jeez... letting a third party do it instead?

I would love to hear more about this.....

and bump or bumping a thread is used to just bring an old thread or maybe a forgotten about thread back up to the top of the listings so people can see it and respond so it is not forgotten about.....

Rather than write something long and drawn out someone will simply say "bump"!

I had time to set up a server today. It is working with my outlook client, but I can't get the blackberry to work at all.

it keeps returning: syncronization failed.null

I can see in the logs that it is connecting to the server. I must be missing something, and at this point, I am in over my head a bit. Any ideas?

Scooby, can you help?

It would be nice if the 7100t could sync with my computer via BlueTooth instead of USB, like my PalmOne Zire72. That was da shiznit, yo.

josh, have you double-checked the remote address book/calendar settings on your BB client? It seems that the default in the beta version is different than that in the stable version. I can't remember off-hand what the difference was, but I had to change my setting from something like sifcalendar to scal, or something to that effect.

Actually, I'm sure you have the right settings, but thought I'd toss this out in the off chance the problem was something simple!

WNO: thanks for the suggestion, but it is set up correctly. I know that the server is working... i can sync my outlook just fine.

it must be something with either external sync sources in general, or the blackberry client itself...

do you know which xml files I need to edit to point to the correct external address?

Josh, sorry, I don't have that level of competence/expertise (in this or in most other matters). FWIW, if you get frustrated with setting up your own Sync4j server, you can try out the Sync4j beta portal or the Sync4j-based ScheduleWorld. At least until ScOObydoo gets around to his setup guide!

Setting up the server and getting outlook clients to sync was really no trouble. It works well! I have multiple PCs syncing the same address book and calendar. I want my bb to sync with them, and actually be the master for changes, so I hope to get it working. I have contacted some Sync4j experts with my log files, and hopefully, they will have some ideas. Then, I can help you all out!

Default Since Scooby hasn't replied...

hey everyone,

I got the Sync4j server up and running just like the rest of you. Lets see if we can figure this out without him.

I'm on T-Mobile so my 7100t has the following Sync4j Blackberry App configuration. Notice, my port number for my setup is 8882(already had something on 8080, this took a port number change in both the SYNC4J_HOME/server/config/sync4j.xml and in SYNC4J_HOME/tools/tomcat/conf/server.xml)...

user:myUsername
password:myPassword
Homepage:http://my.dns.resolvable.host.com:8882/sync4j/sync
Remote address book: scard
Remote calendar: scal
{check} Sync Address Book
{check} Sync Calendar
Gateway APN:wap.voicestream.com
Gateway IP: 216.155.165.50
Gateway Port: 9201

My Sync4j Server config needed me to add "myUsername" in group "USER" through the Sync4j Admin Application, add "myDeviceIMEI_Number" as a device through the Sync4j Application and add a profile associating the username and deviceID. The instructions for this were available from the "AdminGuide.pdf" in >Programs>Sync4j>Documentation>Admin Guide.

All of this (and me setting my hardware firewall and windows integrated firewall to allow 8882) got me to a real xml response stating...

Syncronization Failed.<?xml version="1.0"?><!DOCTYPE wml PUBLIC"-//WAPFORUM//DTD WML 1.1//EN" "http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/ wml_1.1.xml:><wml><card><;><do type="rev" name="Back" label="back"><prev/></do>Your request for a service could not be fulfilled. Please try again or contact your operator if the problem persists. </p></

- then it ran out of screen and I couldn't scroll down -

I believe this to be an authorization issue due to trouble shooting with the Demo GUI Client App. If anyone else can use what I have up here so far to get further then maybe we can catch Scooby.

Good Luck,
prpht9

ps. I'll post again when I get further

Dawg and Jasonwinn

1st, to find out what Sync4j is, please check out their FAQ Q1 and Q2 at...

http://sync4j.funambol.com/main.jsp?main=faq

2nd, to setup the Sync4j server download the 2.3beta1 version and install it to your machine. Then start the server, >Programs>Sync4j>Sync4j Server DS>Start. It's running! Way to go.

http://sync4j.funambol.com/main.jsp?main=download_beta

3rd from the "download_beta" link you need to download the client Blackberry software and install it on your handheld. Most of you should know how to do this already.

Then you can refer back to my earlier post #32 to continue on. Remember most of you will not need to do the port changing section. Just stick with the 8080 port.

Let me know,
prpht9

KonTiki,

I got that error as well. My personal firewall settings at home had to be changed to get past it. Allowing 8080 to get to your windows box with the Sync4j Server should do it.
