Is that a prepaid plan? If so, you can do voice and SMS text. No BlackBerry/data specific services.

Actually I have been using my 8700c with ATT for a month now on the GoPhone Plan. The phone is compatible with the MediaNet package from ATT. At first I called the tech support and they could not help me much with getting the default browser to run and use the internet. After a while and some thinking I decided to purchase the lower package...1MB for $4.99 and see if it will work as I want it or not. I also proceeded with installing Opera browser and Gmail. For mu surprise the browser (Opera) works like a charm - I can browse the Internet and my Gmail works also.
So the outcome:
The phone will work with a GoPhone plan and data plan from ATT (MediaNet). Currently I am using the 100MB = $19.99 which is more than enough for email and some casual browsing. If you use Gmaps...that eats up little bit more data.

Yes - this is true...but it is still a valid option for folks that are looking to save some money at the end. As long as I can get my Gmail....and browse with the opera I am fine. Also the messengers (i use Nimbuzz) they work too.

Some User,
Thanks! This is exactly what I wanted to know. I just got an older BB (8700) but am brand new to cell service (as in I haven't signed up yet).
I want to use a non-contract service for a month until I move. It will help me to decise if I want the "whole enchilada" in terms of cell service. Or if I'll install a land line at the new residence. I may end up upgrading--or not. Have you tried Vlingo? or Mycaption?
