I have a sim from my Cingular Mpx220 that I am trying to move to my BlackBerry 8700 instead of porting the phone number over. This is what happens:

I can get the phone to work fine but the data connection fails. I can see the edge connection in the upper left hand side but it appears in lower case (not in upper case like with the original sim) and says "data connection fails". Is there something Cingluar needs to turn on for this to work or is there a step I am missing?

On another note the sim was really hard to get out until I saw the scotch tape suggestion...it seems to work great. I originally used a small screwdriver but I was afraid I was going to damage it.

I am not sure "porting" the phone numbers will work even if you get the SIM to work. Phone numbers and addresses in a BB are not stored on the SIM.

Your best bet is to get all your numbers/addresses set up in Outlook on a PC and then sync the device up with the USB and Desktop Manager software.

You need a Blackberry data plan associated with that SIM.

You need a blackberry data pack. If your account isn't provisioned for blackberry then you will get the data connection refused message.

If you had somesort of data package for your other phone it won't work with your blackberry as Takeshi and Nitty pointed out. You will need to have your account set up for blackberry. I don't know how it works for data packages in the U.S. but here in Canada we can just call out service provider and have them add a blackberry pack onto our account if we wanted.

Hey! I had a MPx220!! It was a load of CRAP!!! Always freazing, mail was slow, it was horrible!

I replaced it with an iPod Video and an 7290, that was the perfect mix! It's even better with the 8700c because now I have my background image, and custom Star Wars ringtones again!

Yeah, you're going to need the "special" blackberry data connect, not the standard data connect. And you'll have to register with the BIS

First call: 1-800-304-3044 and press "1"

You should be set then. Cingular charges $44.99 for the unlimited data plan, which we all recomend, because even if you don't start off doing a load of emails, with the blackberry you will, and when you do, you'll be happy you've got the unlimited plan!

I wasted $350 on the MPx220!!! It was so cool, because when I told other people the specs on the phone they always drooled! I never told them how completely problematic it was! Hell! it wasn't even a good phone! The speaker was WAY too quiet! The speaker phone sucked! When they released the firmware update to make the handset speaker louder, all it did was to increases the volume to the point that it distorted the sound completely!

I ended up giving my MPx220 to a guy I really hate! I told him it was the coolest phone in the world and he should throw away his old one and use the MPx220.

We don't talk anymore...

Whats really sad is that I got the MPx220 over the RAZR, which were at the same price at the time! I should have gotton the RAZR...

The MPx series really convinced me that Motorola and Microsoft do not have their act together YET for smartphones. Of course that is just my opinion. I'm sure somewhere there are people who like the MPx200/220.

I was railroaded into getting the 220 from two co-workers who had the 200.

I've been seeing a lot about the new Motorola Q, maybe that will work out nicely.

Thanks for the info...with regards to the 8700 versus the Mpx220. Once I upgraded the firmware on the Mpx I never had a problem after that. I think the BB is great the only thing I really miss is the "free" voice recognition software that the Mpx had installed. I do have the unlimited data plan but not the BB package. I will check with my Cingular rep and have that enabled.
