Default Does locking the keyboard when not in use do anything to preserve battery life?

Please Login to Remove!

There is definitely something wrong with my battery. Some days I might not even make a phone call and total maybe 30 minutes of social media (facebook) and another hour of BBM.

I've asked family members how long their phones last, and they all last at least a day and a half with average phone use.

Anyway, since I have a skin for my BB9000 it's not as easy to unlock the phone via the mute button. But should I be locking my keyboard when not in use to preserve battery life?

Absolutely. The sooner you can shut off the screen when you're done using it, the better. Also, ensure that you don't have Bluetooth or WiFi enabled if you're not using them.

Locking the keypad when carrying the device will prevent an accidental key press from activating the display. That will prevent undue power use.

Also take a look at the third party and add-on apps you have running all the time, and particularly those that are hitting the network all the time. Think facebook, twitter, any navigation apps, and that sort of stuff. Absolutely close everything except the core apps that run all the time, and set the update period to the max (hours instead of minutes) on the add-on apps that can't be fully closed either, and watch for 24 hours and see what happens.

not fully correct, if the keyboard is locked and you press any of the keys, the background light still turns on....

Maybe it depends, but I didn't think so. Just tested on 9700/5.0.0.714 and it functions as I said. Lock the keyboard, press some keys, and the screen stays off. Otherwise, what's the point? It's not a keyboard lock if it doesn't lock the keyboard.

If the device is in standby pressing the keyboard will illuminate the screen stating "the device in in standby".

Probably not enough to worry about. As said above, when the device goes to standby, there will be some conservation, but how much is very hard to quantify.

For what it's worth, I hardly know what standby is anymore. I just checked the 9700 manual, and the word is only used in this context once, but it isn't defined.

I distinguish between the device lock (password lock) and keypad lock. If the device is password lock, pressing a key will of course activate the screen to alert the operater that the device is locked, etc.

I don't know that I've ever seen "the device is in standby" ... or if I have I've that brain cell storing the memory has since died.
