Default Success(!) with Cingular, TCP/IP, and wap.cingular

Please Login to Remove!

After reading this, please see the end of the thread. Cingular CAN do this, but the CSRs are mostly clueless. When you get a good one, stay on the line and let the person solve as many problems as possible. Last update was May 28, when I got to deal with the errors in the bill.

May 2:
I just got off the phone with Cingular. The bottom line is that it looks like they will enable the wap.cingular apn as part of the unlimited BB data plan. Here's what I've had to do

1. Buy 7100g, call 611 and ask for BB unlimited data + wireless
internet express PPU, as per the FAQ.

All is well, idokorro ssh works great.

a. look at minutes used on line two days later, see that I'm getting logged
for data used

2. Call 611 to complain about 1a, person on other end says that I still have
features from old media works. She deletes them and promises my bill
will be voice plan + unlimited BB only.

a. Idokorro ssh shows the the tunneling error

3. Call the data line 866 490 2666 and ask them to enable the wap.cingular
apn. The guy does it, and ssh works again. He added the $5/month media
plan. Not optimal, but from the chatter here and on howardforums, it
seemed reasonable. He says that Cingular can clearly tell the difference
between apn data (ssh) and everything else.

a. repeat 1a

4. Call the data line and ask what the deal is with my on-line account.
The guy looks at the on-line data + my feature list, consults someone
while putting me on hold. Says that "wap.cingular" is included with the
BB plan, and all he has to do is enable it. He tells me to pull the battery.

a. ssh fails, he goes away, I turn the phone on and off and

SSH works! I'm only paying 44.99!

So, Cingular can do this, and it seems to be policy.

I'd be ashamed to tell you how much time I had to invest in this. The key seems to be that you can enable wap.cingular without a media plan. Insist on that and the people at the data line will figure it out.

Good luck.

Now to see if my bill is a mess this month.

You are going to be charged for the data at the rate of 1 cent per KB.

Excellent instructions!

That's true about 1 cent a kilobyte, but SSH doesn't use much data, so it's not really that bad.

Much less data than web surfing. Some short SSH sessions cost less than a single SMS text message!

I estimate my ssh costs at $2/month or less. I'm not going to write books on the 7100's screen/keyboard. I did ask the guy on the data line if wap.cingular would cost me anything. He said no. Who am I gonna believe? You guys, of course! I have yet to get a consistent story from two Cingular reps in a row.

What I'm most worried about is that Cingular will make their usual mess with my bill, which they do everytime I change anything. I'm about to take the 7100g on a little tour (Canada, Germany, Sweden, France) over the next month. It'll be fun to see how they bill for international BB data. I wonder what PockedDay's weather will cost in Sweden?

When I had a simple moto v400. Internation data cost me $.01/kb, but Cingular could never bill it on time, and rarely billed it right. Yeesh!

611 gets a call tomorrow to stop the automatic billing to my credit card.

I'd switch providers, but I need international service and it seems that T-moblie is worse.

If you plan to be gone for an extended period of time (at least a few weeks), you may want to temporarily switch to their international data plan. It's $25/month extra ($70/month instead of $45/month) and it includes unlimited international data. I'm pretty sure you could add this for a month and then remove it when you get back.

Default It never seems to end. Cingular sells me mailstreet.

New update as of May 7. I'd be a mailstreet guy tomorrow if it weren't for

http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=7908

Anyhow, ...

There's more. I thought I had this solved on May 2, but no.....

wap.cingular ceased to work on Tuesday, May 3. I called the data
line and the guy on the other end said that the May 2 guy
did something (but he couldn't say what) at variance with the rules,
which was automatically erased overnight.

So I sat on hold for over an hour, while this guy fiddled with my features.
My options on May 3 were

$2.99 for pay per use at $.02 / kb
$4.99 for 500 kb and $02/kp for anything over that

I went with the $4.99 plan, and it showed up on my online
feature list immediately. ssh worked.

I'm fed up, and will do a hosted BES/MDS deal as soon as
I find the time to figure it all out.

I tried hard to get the guy to tell me what happend on May 2,
but he had no clue. He said that you can't put a $.01/kb plan
with a BB data plan. I'm 90% sure that's wrong, but wasn't making
progress with this guy.

On May 4, I looked at my feature list and say that the $5/month
plan was gone. I tested ssh and it worked. Installed PocketDay and
weather worked fine.

On May 5 I left for Toronto, I enabled the international unlimited
data plan, and wap.cingular died, ssh and weather didn't work, and
ssh gave me the tunneling error. Arrived back in US two hours ago,
still nothing. It may be that I get the apn with the $45 unlimeted
domestic plan, but not with the international plan.

I'll need the interational plan until I get back from Europe on the 19th. I hope I can get a hosted BES/MDS going in the next week.

Default Final (I hope) solution

May7, 9am:

I called the data line and got someone who

1. got be back to where I was when I was happy:

a.) no media plans on my account
b.) $.01/kb

2. and also fixed up my international service and explained how to turn it
on/off without giving the 611 people an opportunity to destroy anything
else.

See:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/show...=international

3. He said my bill should come out fine, but to call the data line if it did
not.

Bottom line: I've invested 12 calls to Cingular at an average of 1hr/call to
get something done that should have taken 5 mins.

Freakin amazing! I just got off the phone with a Cingular rep who told me that the only way I would get this to work would be to subscribe to the $80/mth laptop connect plan. WTF?!? I am going to try your approach and be persistant over several days. I don't mind paying $5/month since this would replace my OGO that cost $20/month. I am going to try to add the $4.99 plan from the web and see if that works.

I'm on Cingular too but when I called about the wap.cinguar.apn issue, they told me it was for laptop/modem connect only.

Hi all. This is sure confusing!

My company is going to install a BES server shortly. Once they do this, will the BES server take care of everything so I no longer have to worry about the wap.cingular connection?

From what I have read, I think it will, but I'd like to make sure before I go on a wild goose chase.

It's funny because AT&T merged with Cingular, I heard the joke that the AT&T meant "At This Time", because they changed their policies so often. Almost sounds like Cingular is more like AT&T.

All my problems went away for $20/month paid to link2exchange. I should get a bill from Cingular in a few days, and I'll report if it is correct or not. I'm not optimistic.

I got much more from link2exchange than getting all the ports to work. The syncing of calanders + tasks from work and home (both Macs) to the BB was really easy, once I figured out what to tell entrouage to do. If I could get this to work with the linux partition on my laptop, I'm be completely satisfied.

This is really nuts. Cingular could sell a lot of high-revenue BB data plans if they would traint their people to deal with the device.

Cingular will change their voice/data plans at the first of the month, by the way. It's not clear if this will apply to BB. See

Yes and no, with a BES you don't need to worry about this, but your BES Admins must also allow you to use the browser as well.

Default Check, please! Waiter, there's a fly in my bill.

I just got my bill from Cingular, and, as expected, it was wrong.
I'd expected much worse, though. Here's the story:

1. I turned on unlimited international data (code IUBR) two weeks ago.
The person who did this at the cingular end was supposed to
turn off my regular BB plan, so that I would not be charged
the 44.99 twice. He didn't and I was. I'd asked three different
Cingular people if this would become a problem; all said no.

2. I got billed for international data anyway. The service
to 3 days to turn on, not the 3 minutes I was promised.

3. I call 611 and the person on the other end fixes the bill
and all seems well. I hang up and notice that the data for
my BB is dead.

4. So it's back to Cingular data to get the international plan provisioned
which the 611 person I spoke with today forgot to do. That error aside
she was pretty good. The person on the data number said that the way
to do things like turn unlimited international service on/off is to call them
at 1-800-304-3044, and let them send you to the right place.

Calling Cingular on Saturday seems to produce better results than
calling during normal business hours. The 611 person I spoke to
figured out the BB stuff in about 10 mins, and turned by $160
bill into a $95 bill, which is about right. The person on the data line who
rereprovisioned my account was very efficient, too.

Maybe this is the end of it.

I can't get Verichat or MyBlueberry to work at all! I have a 7290 on Cingular and I'm in California. I have made multiple calls to Cingular and tried every setting in these threads to no avail. Here's the deal: I don't get any error messages at all. I see the little arrows come up, but they immediately go away and then nothing. It just times out. This is happening with Verichat and when I try to provision BES for MyBlueberry (I just signed up for it over the weekend hoping it would end some of the issues I've been having with Cingular.) My husband has a 7100G. We called Cingular and had the Data Connect added to his account and his is working!!! However, if we take his SIM and put it in my 7290, my 7290 still doesn't work. I have reset and pulled the filppin batteries out of this thing with every combo of settings for days on end and it's still not working. WTF? Any ideas? BTW, cingular's built-in stuff (browser and email) work great on it!! Argh - I need real time chat.

Myblueberry is playing to mixed reviews around here (do a search). These mixed reviews are the reason I went with a higher-priced BES/MDS provider. The usual suspects seem to be link2exchange and mailstreet. Each have their strong points. link2exchange worked best for me. For the $20/month I got really good support and the stuff I want to work does. The browser you get with MDS is a bit better than the Cingular browser.

Using Cingular TCP/IP will work too, but you can spend way too much time getting it all provisioned right. I think I finally have it, but got so fed up that I signed up with link2exchange. For me, link2exchange's benefits (no TCP/IP billing wierdness, 100MB storage on the mail server, good and knowledgeable support people, better browser) are worth the $20/month.
