Please review lifetime ban -
09-21-2009, 07:37 PM
Hi - My husband was banned for life from this forum yesterday, and though I admit he's not an angel (who is?), it really looks like a couple of moderators had it in for him, so I'm posting (without his knowledge) in the hope that some of the other moderators will review what happened. There was definitely a little testosterone on both sides, but it looks like my husband was provoked. He was looking for some calendar SW for me, and when he tried to explain that the options suggested by a moderator didn't work for me (one was unsupported, the other I was uncomfortable with), they piled it on him. Some other people ultimately provided useful suggestions that we are going to look into.
Now perhaps he shouldn't have directly asked the moderator to stop posting what he thought was unconstructive comments, but it's not clear to me that was a request he should have needed to make. I mean, other people were calling him names and being quite critical of his questions. He did push back a bit (he's not a doormat), but at least he used polite language and smiley faces to try to lighten the mood.
Anyway - all I'm asking for is an impartial review. He was doing this for me so I kind of feel responsible.
The thread is here

I am NOT aware of the issue. It may be more effective if you contact the mods (blue font) in private). If you click on their names, there's an option to send a private message.

MsJeffwhatsyourname,
I have read the hubby's thread to an impartial jury consisting of Sam, my dog, who knows neither one you.
The jury is out for now. I think he is licking something.
When a decision is determined, you will be notified.

It does seem that the other thread escalated quickly. Did some of the "rude" posts get deleted or something? I didn't really see anything but a member asking questions and then getting dumped on.

Clearly some posts were removed as there are quotes in some posts that don't appear in the rest of the thread, so perhaps there were comments that more warranted a ban than what is still visible. I would hate to think that without fair warning a user was banned for solely what was in the thread.
On the other side...while this Forum is less active than Crackberry, it is where I come for real answers as the attacks from abusive posters is rarely tolerated.
Edit:
This is the kind of comments that might have led to his ban.

Nope. There were no rude posts. Nothing got deleted. The answer to the question was given in post #2 of the thread, and the OP kept pushing back and it was only then dumped on.
Mrs. Jeff, tell hubby to think first, then post.

@barbwyr, nothing was deleted in that thread. There are no orphaned quotes in that thread. I'm not sure what you're seeing there.
@C17DRIVER, The thread escalated with post #8. Read it, it was his own post.

I missed that thread as well. I think this was a classic case of Jeff biting the hand that feeds. JSanders gave him suggestions that Jeff did not like, then Jeff took the thread off track himself in post #8. I agree with NJ in saying Jeff needs to think before he posts. Also, a little gratitude towards the moderators and members here that volunteer their time to help others (including Jeff) wouldn't hurt either.

So many people just don't think outside their own little boxes enough to realize that this site, like so many others, is free, voluntarily supported, and not owned by the developer/manufacturer of the target products. There is an assumption that because these sites exist, they must provide high quality, free tech support, despite that tech support is so often paid for these days. When people help here (and at other similar sites), they do so of their own free will, offering their time and expert knowledge (usually) with no expectation of compensation, save perhaps for a thank you every now and again.
As the owner of Lightroom Forums, I see this some (although we have taken great strides to maintain a civil tone by quickly squashing angry posts), and this thread reminds me of the time I was blasted at my own site for having an opinion! Wow... I didn't realize that because I created a tech support site with my own money and time that I was therefore prohibited from sharing my opinion!
And while I'm standing on my soapbox, let me also take a moment to get this off my chest (and I'm speaking generally, not to anyone in particular here): using the title "HELP ME NOW I AM HAVING ISSUES - EMERGENCY" or something similar in no way makes your problems my priority. There are two primary reasons people come here: for open discussion, and for help. Your emergency isn't any more important that anyone else's emergency, so stop pretending that your life is coming to an end if everyone doesn't drop what they're doing just to focus on you.

In case no one noticed, the OP of the thread in question registered with 3 usernames. He was warned after creating the second user account, which is clearly against forum rules, yet he persisted and created a third account.

It was a quote credit to him in post #10 that is not present in any previous posts, that's why I thought there might be some deleted. Parhaps he modified a previous post to make his arguement look better.
Regardless, Daphne's explanation makes it clear. He was warned of a violation and repeated said violation and thus...POOF. If you don't wanna play by the rules you can go play somewhere else. Crackberry will take ya..lol.

I've seen more than one moderator here post inappropriate comments, bait people, or purposely escalate a situation. It was pretty shameful.
Verizon 7250 > 8703 > 9530 (returned) > 8703 > 9630 #1 > 9630 #2 > 9630 #3 > 9630 #4 < perfect so far!

This thread has come to a timely death.
@C17DRIVER, yes--check the timing of the those two posts... I quoted jeffw00's original post and he edited the same post within a minute of my posting... unfortunate timing, but there's no boogie man in the woodpile here. Sorry to disappoint.
@kurichan, you see one side of what went on, and quite a while after the fact, at that. If you have specific complaints about something or simply insight you wish to share, you are welcome to post your own thread or PM any moderator. I think vague general statements as yours above are simply intended to incite and really just aren't helpful, nor welcome. Sorta third-graderish to run around the playground saying 'the teachers are mean".
For all... since we all love a bloodletting (or daytime TV, grocery store tabloids and WWF would not be so popular), the forum moderators and this member jeffw have a history that goes back several months, including what we think were cheap potshots at several of us for simply no reason, and on one instance because another of his threads was moved to a section (to Rants and Raves, imagine that!) to which he didn't agree. One of his rant threads was 92 posts long, and when it was finally closed, he started another... does the cycle begin to sound familiar? Aside from stating the he "loathed" to post on this forum, he kept coming back... why? Because he did get help here.
The moderation team of this forum is one of the best of any I have observed. You'll never see a moderator here curse users or demean them to the point of tears, for any simple query. I see that dozens of times each day on other forums. People come here for help, and being super knowledgeable community, I very rarely see users go away disappointed. Very rarely.
The moderation team are volunteers, and quite frankly, don't need the crap that users like jeffw00 have to offer. Once is a mistake, twice is tolerable, but after that, the user is a just a pest and he gets swatted. Oh well, life goes on.
