PREFACE

The purpose of this book is toexplain in a practical manner the operation and applications of the cathode rayoscilloscope. This is not an engineering manual. We expect that our readerswill be radio and amplifier servicemen, and some radio operators, students andtechnicians.

Because of its general usefulnessfor all kinds of radio work, the oscilloscope deserves to be used much morewidely than it is now. We believe that radio servicemen have neglected theoscilloscope more because of a lack of knowledge of how to use it than for anyother single reason. This book explains in simple terms the steps to follow inusing an oscilloscope to service AM and FM radios, audio amplifiers andtransmitters. All theoretical material has been sifted, condensed and siftedagain. Only absolutely essential theory— theory which we believe will be of real value to radio servicemen — has beenretained. We have tried to keep the language as simple as possible and yet givecomplete and technically accurate explanations as well as detailed pictorialmaterial to aid in a better understanding of the function of the oscilloscope.

Space in any book unfortunately islimited. There has not been room for every one of the thousands of applicationsof the oscilloscope. We have selected for complete explanation thoseapplications which are most likely to be of interest and service to ourreaders. If we have been able, in any measure, to save radio servicemen timeand trouble and make their tasks more interesting and enjoyable through betterunderstanding and familiarity with new tools, we will consider our job not sobadly done.
