Vintage AN/PDR-8B Radiac Set US Navy Geiger Counter :
$80.00

Rare item! This is a late 1940s shipboard Geiger counter, model AN/PDR-8B manufactured for the U.S. Navy\'s Bureau of Ships. Built by Hoffman Radio Corporation, this Geiger counter is battery powered and comes in a Navy steel storage case with extras. Included are a Geiger tube handset probe (with pivoting beta shield), a telescoping handle, and vinyl slings (for carrying the unit around the user\'s neck).
The box is gray painted steel. It shows modest wear from storage and handling. The actual meter is made from cast aluminum. It\'s in very good shape. The Geiger tube is present and in working order. With proper batteries installed, the AN/PDR-8B does power up, but it does not respond to radioactive check sources. There may a tube or capacitor in need of replacement. I have not tried to do this.
The meter uses 2 x 67.5 batteries (Eveready 467 or NEDA 200), 2 x 1.5 volt dry cells--Not D batteries but old fashioned screw terminal dry cells, and 1 x 15 volt (Eveready 504, NEDA 220A). The battery compartment shows signs of corrosion, but I cleaned it up. The electronics are in a separate part of the case and not affected by any corrosion.
Also included is the original Navy manual (a little dog-eared but perfectly readable), Vinyl carrying straps (stiff with age but present).
No headphones. The headphone jack is a BNC connector. There is a socket in the case for spare Geiger tube. There\'s a broken Geiger tube in the spare socket. The one installed in the set is intact and works--I tested it outside the AN/PDR-8B.
The Geiger tube alone is worth the asking price! This model counter probably saw service at places like Bikini Atoll, so there\'s a lot of history inherent in this old meter. Because of its age and design, I do not offer it as a working Geiger counter (though I firmly believe it can be put in working shape without much trouble), but as a Atomic Age relic and a Naval curio.
The set is substantial. Before being packaged for shipping it weighs 19 pounds.
More info about the AN/PDR-8B can be found atthe Oak Ridge Associated Universties (ORAU) web page under \"Military Radiacmeters.\"
I am no longer offering the surplus vacuum tubes with this item, so I have lowered the price. 7/25/2016
