So, if you are interested in this item, keep an eye on this listing or its successor.This is a vintage Universal Atomics CD-V700 Model 4 radiation detector (\"geiger counter\"), serial no. 5331. It includes the measuring unit, the headphone, the strap, the manual and the original cardboard box. My father purchased it sometime after 1955 either for prospecting or for the end days. It appears to have once been issued for a Civil Defense purpose, as there is some blemishing on one side where a CD insignia might have once been (see the last photo).The unit is in very good condition--see the photos and the video. It is in working order--I have powered it up and I provide a video of a test using the calibration source on the case (be sure to turn up the sound). However, it does behave intermittently depending on how careful you are when placing the five D-cell batteries in the holder. IF you are planning to use this unit to estimate radioactivity then you must have it checked out, clean all the battery contacts, and calibrate it or have it calibrated. Instructions for calibration are in the manual. The device does not have the battery-retention strap that was supplied with some units. You can use a piece of webbing for this purpose. The box has some handwritten notations by my father. The manual was folded in the box, so it has one fold across it, but is otherwise like new. The case has the blemish noted above and shown in the last photo.Note that the calibration source on this device contains a small amount of Radium-226 and its decay products. This amount of radium falls under the general license in 10 CFS 31.12. Note also that the half life of Radium-226 is 22 years, so that this source is no longer equivalent to its original specification.The device will be shipped with the calibration source covered in lead foil.
