10-25-2009 04:32 AM2 out of 2 success rate so far!
1. Backup your SD Micro memory card to a folder on your computer
2. On the copy on your computer, delete all "BBThumbs.dat" files in all folders
3. In your BlackBerry, REFORMAT your SD Micro Memory card.
4. Copy your memory card contents from your computer back to the SD Micro memory card.
If you've got internal memory, do the same for your 1 gigabyte of internal device memory. Although that really can't be reformatted, you should be able to least delete the BBThumbs.dat files in this 'memory' too by accessing this in Mass Storage mode. Alternatively, you can temporarily set aside the memory card and use a different SD Micro card and reformat it.
I suspect RIM must have improved their filesystem scanner speed, and there's some stability bug in the filesystem scanner (and the .dat files appear to be some kind of fast thumbnail-index files on the memory card). It has happened before in varions versions of OS 4.6 likely because some optimized-performance thumbnails reader crashes when reading corrupted BBThumbs.dat files.
Besides, starting afresh actually improves the thumbnails performance after the initial lengthy scan. Also, your BlackBerry may be slow for a few minutes while the scanner is regenerating the BBThumbs.dat files in the background. But then you'll have a fast and stable BlackBerry afterwards.
Anyway, it seems to stabilize at least one cause of 5.0.0.314 random reboots.
10-25-2009 09:47 AMit worked!!

my device keep rebooting every 30 min!! when i apply this method it's working fine
Thanks
10-25-2009 10:48 PMI just had to reformat my media card. thanks.
10-26-2009 12:35 AMUpdate... I realized you can also reformat the internal memory too, in the new "Memory" screen of BlackBerry. So both the internal memory and the memory card can be reformatted. Reformat seems to work better than just using Mass Storage and deleting the BBThumbs.dat files directly.
Also, a clean install is also a safer bet (device wipe and install 5.0.0.314) as it solves other, different, possible causes of crash/reboots.
Just making sure all bases are covered, because 5.0.0.314 is really a good BlackBerryOS, and fire-breathingly fast when properly installed (about 2x to 5x faster than 4.6.0.230-4.6.0.260 range in my experience, including BlackBerry Browser, to things like application launching speed, etc.) It is almost as if RIM replaced the OS JVM, or did some mondo performance profiling & optimizing, or something.
10-26-2009 01:23 AMWorked for me!
10-26-2009 02:59 AMnow if only this version.. was official !
10-26-2009 03:36 AMI am experiencing issues with alarm clock not working. It would freeze when I go under menu> set alarm. I can manage to go back to other apps and after about 10 mins, it would then give me a unexpected exception message. Anyone else having this issue?

My alarm works fine.
Do you have any 3rd party apps that hook into the alarm or calendar? Try disabling those temporarily. A clean OS install may also help too.
10-26-2009 12:35 PMThaks for your suggest, i will do that (also i though bout this same).
i made today test with Benchmark magic on 5.0.0.314 and it shows
from:
graphics: 35.7 poly/s
CPU: 1325322 ops/s
Speed Index: 1361.0
to:
graphics: 35.7 poly/s
CPU: 1410743 ops/s
Speed Index: 1446.4
My buddy which returns to OS 4.6 has:
graphics: 14.7 poly/s
CPU: 975925 ops/s
Speed Index: 990.6
Different is huge!

Are you saying that your "from" results are using OS 5.0.0.238 and your "to" results are using OS 5.0.0.314?

Nope, im saying that my "from" & "to" results are using 5.0.0.314, i dont check on 5.0.0.238

But comparing to the OS 4.6 diffrrent is big. Beside OS *314 is much faster that *238, browser is better and loads pages faster, browsing pictures is more faster.
10-26-2009 02:18 PMMy bold still reboots...
10-26-2009 04:37 PMMine too. Wiped. Reformated and still going crazy
10-26-2009 05:27 PMHow often are the reboots?
Secondly, you've already heard this, but you are using software that is not official, and by installing said software on your device, you take all the problems and risks that come with it.
10-26-2009 06:05 PMGreat.. after I read this post my Bold starts rebooting itself.. will have to try this fix now.
10-26-2009 06:15 PMI've only had a couple of reboots but I will try this method. Thanks!
10-26-2009 06:28 PMAfter do that, i noticed one restart.
10-26-2009 06:44 PMSame as above. Has not restarted till this morning.. Will monitor it.
10-26-2009 07:05 PMFollowing the instructions didn't work until I did a battery pull.. so far it's been staying on for about an hour..
10-26-2009 07:53 PMRandomly rebooted twice since my last post.. I think i might revert back to 4.6 if this keeps up.
10-26-2009 08:48 PMreset 3 times in 30mins. was ok the first 24hrs...
10-26-2009 09:28 PMFor those that had it reboot.. were you guys charging the phone? For some reason when I stopped charging the phone via USB or the adapter, the reboots have stopped.
10-27-2009 12:04 AMmy phone will reboot right after it starts to search for service. unless i am in 3G coverage. if im in EDGE it will just reboot over and over
10-27-2009 12:40 AMMine started rebooting again just after I installed the apps world and reinstall facebook.
10-27-2009 02:08 PMPhone still reboots.. It's not that much of a nuisance.. I mean it only takes like what, 40 seconds to boot back up? And it never happens during calls or anything so w.e
10-27-2009 05:06 PMUsed the method in OP and I haven't had a single random reboot. Hope it stays that way.
10-28-2009 05:39 AMThis OS will reboot on its own or while you are doing something, and I have no doubt that it will also reboot itself during a phone call. Bear that in mind.
10-28-2009 08:48 AMI am going to downgrade to a previous version of the 5.0 9000 OS. If the reboots happened once a day, I would be able to tolerate them, but now they are occuring every five minutes are so, even after a battery pull. The trouble is not worth it.
10-28-2009 09:30 AMactually i did the downgrading already..
this beta is not stable as .238 i followed the steps deleting the files formatting the memory card & the device pulled the battery and it was ok for 2 days then back to rebooting
waiting for the official OS 5

10-28-2009 01:21 PMI went to downgrade from this OS, while it was doing its rebooting deal, and my Blackberry began not being recognized by my PC. Took about an hour to get it to recognize it. Thought about downgrading to .238 but still having problems so I am going to go to the official AT&T Device OS and hope my device is not messed up. It's hanging on the device restart and everything now.

Yes it reboots when charging.

Yup...that also seems to be the only time my phone reboots as well. I have it plugged in when I'm in my truck and have it paired to my stereo. Once I unplug it, it works fine.
Think we found the bug. Let's hope RIM finds it too.
10-29-2009 03:28 PMI ended up reformatting my card entirely, after removing the bbthumbs didn't work. Also switched back from extended to regular battery in case contacts were loose. I have been using a USB charger? Are some saying that if the cradle is used that is not an issue? Why would that be?
10-29-2009 03:42 PMI don't have a cradle charger for my bold so I'm not sure. But my Bold has stopped resetting after I stopped charging it with my AC Adapter and my USB cable.
However it's been almost 3 days now and I had to charge my phone via USB and Adapter (depending on where I am) and my reset issue has completely disappeared..
10-29-2009 03:53 PMYeah...it's the car charger that's causing the re-boots.

At first I thought it was my wifi, so I turned that off. Still rebooted. Tried your suggestion about the memory card. No avail. So I removed the card entirely. Charging cradle/cable made no difference. Wiped the device, and started fresh with no third party apps, still resets. I tried everything I could think of. As far as I could tell, it was totally random. The only time it didn't reset, was when I had a bluetooth headset paired to it. Ended up going back to .238 for now.
10-29-2009 08:41 PMI too am beginning to think its charger related. 2 reboots today, both while a charger was attached.

10-29-2009 11:24 PMI think it's both charger (power management) and wireless related. When i mean wireless i mean like wifi and bluetooth. I discovered too that charging when on my cradle or plugged in my car charger, it'll reboot. Also, when turning on/off wifi and BT, it usually, once in a while reboot itself.
Im not sure if the reformat helps, it may be some sort of stop gap or temporary solution, but not an overall or permanent one, that's for sure.
10-29-2009 11:52 PMSomething new
Each time I send a sms it reboots
10-30-2009 04:26 PMI can charge with USB with no problems.
10-30-2009 06:31 PMThe OP solution Did not work for me.
However, the number of crashes seems to be less frequent, when I switch off the WiFi.
10-30-2009 08:06 PMI haven't had any reboots when charging. However, I did notice that when switched to 2G mode only I had a few reboots. In 3G no issues at all.
10-31-2009 03:30 AMIt has to be network selection. We have a deadzone at work and it reboots like crazy whenever I'm in there. Outside of that area it is fine.

I agree with this theory over the media card bbthumbs.dat (although I am sure that corrupt bbthumbs.dat's do clear it up for some).
From reading elsewhere, 3G seems to work okay, but the handoff from 3G to 2G does not and causes a reboot. To test this, I switched to 3G only, and so far no reboots. I am going to test it further and go 2G only after I have given it sufficient time to confirm this. If that works, I will try 2G & 3G again, and if the reboots resume, I will keep it on either one until the next 5.0 (leaked or released).
Update: 2G only rebooted, so staying on 3G only (which if I understand, AT&T users cannot set their BB's to, as the option is not there).
11-02-2009 08:34 PMIf you do a back-up through Desktop manager, can you then format your memory card then restore to the media card what was backed up on DM?
11-02-2009 08:49 PMWe don't have a 3G network here as yet.. so.. I'm stuck on 2G >.>
As I got the drives showing up in My Computer now, I'll try formatting again.
11-02-2009 09:26 PMJust formatted. No reboots since :P

LOL
11-03-2009 02:38 PMWell no reboots since yesterday... However. i do suspect it rebooted on me while I was sleeping... But, regardless.. No reboots so far :D
11-04-2009 03:54 PMI have had no reboots since T-Mobile's outage.
11-04-2009 07:34 PMMore reboots . yay -.-

As stated before. This is a BETA OS that is not officially released. There will not be an official fix. You have two options available to you. You can either go to a previous release, or go back to an officially released version supported by RIM and the Carrier.
11-05-2009 01:08 PMMy phone just rebooted like 4 times within the last 5 mins. I can't take this anymore.Back to .238.
11-05-2009 07:41 PMI've tried everything mentioned, and still had numerous reboots. (No wifi, bt, 3G, only EDGE.) Went back to .130 (yay tabbed browsing).
11-05-2009 11:45 PMI have had some rebooting issues but all of a sudden it has rebooted 6 times in the last hour, too! I may have to go down :(
11-10-2009 08:18 PMyesterday I disabled the "bedside mode" of the 9000.
no restarts since 24hrs - using 2G and wireless.
That does not mean, this fixes the problems, could be just coincidence + random luck.
But, if you like, try it out.
11-10-2009 10:56 PMI have had Random reboots using that os i downgraded back so there is a bug in 5.0 yet

11-10-2009 11:04 PMRight, I also experienced this, but not as many as with this version. I had maybe 1 every 3 days, now, i had up to 10 each day.
11-11-2009 10:50 AMto early - today morning the device had again rebooted itself - this is also not a real fix.
11-11-2009 12:29 PMAfter rebooting 4 times in 5 minutes, I could not take it anymore and went back to .238...
Waiting patiently on another leak / official os
11-11-2009 12:44 PM
11-11-2009 12:46 PMYes, but, does not help.
The reboots are the result of something else - for me.
11-11-2009 12:59 PMYes.

11-11-2009 01:31 PMSometimes, I think, the reboots happen, when the device starts connecting to a different GSM Cell tower. At least reboots happen more often, when I am on the road, then, when I am at home.
But, the last reboot happend during the night, when the BB did nothing (exept receiving emails) while I am sleeping.

11-11-2009 09:42 PMHow to fix OS 5.0.0.314 reboots? Use OS 5.0.0.348

11-12-2009 11:13 AMHi,
I formated the internal and the SD memory cards and removed the *.dat files. The no reboot since last 6 hours. Earlier the reboots were almost hourly.
The device keeps loosing the default ringtones! When trying to change the profile, get the following message "Invalid ring tone selected, please make another selection" Only a reboot via battery removal solves this temporarily. Any solutions?
Thanks

I agree.
99% of my random reboots occur while on the road in rural IL and WI. Always seems to happen JUST as I'm checking Google Maps for the next turn ;)
Good thing I have an analog map...
It did reboot once while plugged into my PC. I was rebooting the PC and just as the USB driver loaded POOF. Reboot.
It also rebooted once in the middle of the night. I woke up to the LED flashing in my face cuz it doesn't go back into bedside mode...
11-12-2009 07:14 PMI have moved to 5.0.0.348 and with 5.0.0.314 I was getting reboots with EDGE (2G) repeatedly and screen refresh problems. I have neither of these issues now. It has been installed for two days.
With 314 and 348 I had very low memory and was not able to determine what files I could delete. The usual suspects PTT and others were not there. Does anyone know of any easy deletes?
Thanks
11-13-2009 05:00 PMnow, 19hrs after installing .348 the first reboot.
I now took the time to examine the log of the Device:
Last Entry in the system log before reboot:
net.rim.hrt.RT
"Always logged"
EPRj 0x2400000001
and, a few lines before
net.rim.tcp
"Error"
DNSx -1
Does that mean something - I am not used to read the logs.

I get something very similar to this .... basically my phone was not ringing and I have to use vibrate, and when I try to change the ringtone to any of the dozens of tones in the standard list, I'm told "invalid ringtone selected, please make another selection". Actually I can choose any ringtone, but when I go to the "Try It" button, I get the error ... and my phone doesn't ring ... so I have to use vibrate .... any solution to this yet?
.348 is out for me since I'm on AT&T
