Think i tempted fate, the blackberry server closed the connection and now it won't connect anymore :(
The address is still there in WiFi diagnostics even after a reboot so i'm hoping it's a temporary thing and it's going to come back on!

nope, and it's lost the address now in the diagnostics page.
What i didn't say before is that seconds before it disconnected i got an email to each of my accounts saying that the email account has now been setup blah blah. I don't why, i hadn't changed anything or resent my service books
So it's like something was reset at RIMs end and i lost it.

i guess the other thing that could have happened is because the blackberry service was only added to this sim today that it wasn't setup properly when it worked and now everything is setup O2 have some config that is stopping it

probably the same thing that occured with me. It has worked at the beginning I got my 8820 and now nothing.

I have exactly the same problem as you on an O2 8120. Please let us know what your account manager says about wi-fi on the BIS. I have spoken to O2 and to someone in the "technical" department, and have heard the same response "we do not support wi-fi" from several different people, which suggests it is a stock response. It was explained to me as meaning "we do have training in wi-fi" ie technical support, but looking at this and other forums, it seems O2 may not support wi-fi at all (for the BIS).

I appear have found a way to force the BIS 8120 to use wi-fi in the browser, although this is not particularly practical or useful, but it might help those more technically minded than me to analyse what is happening.

In the browser I have gone to options and changed the default browser to wi-fi browser.

I have then gone to the manage connections menu and turned off mobile network by unchecking the box.

I have then turned off wi-fi in manage connections.

Conducting a scan of available networks then produces a prompt asking if I want to turn wi-fi on. If you reply yes to this, it shows me my saved home wi-fi network. Clicking on this gives a screen headed wi-fi security, with two fields, [b]Security type /B] and pre-shared key both of which are pre-filled, the first with pre-shared key and the second with the key itself. At the bottom of the page is a connect button. Clicking on this connects to the wi-fi network.

If I now open the browser, I have the heading wi-fi browser, and the wi-fi symbol that appears on the main screen now appears in the top right-hand corner. The browser then works on wi-fi. I have no idea why, and it is wholly impractical. Other data functions do not work - no email - in this setting. I hope this is helpful to someone.

You really don't need to do any of that, if you select the wifi browser then you will use the wifi, it is the blackberry functions that don't work.
My contact called me last thing Friday to say it is supported by BlackBerry and he will continue to find a resolution with me on Monday. The fact that it worked whilst the BlackBerry service was being provisioned shows that it is just a config error and can be resolved. I'll keep this thread updated with the process.

It seems that your contact at O2 are more clever than mine here in France.
Perhaps you 'll be able to fix this issue for you and all other bb users in trouble with that !!

Are you sure your contact is right. I cannot get the wifi browser to work with the GPRS/EDGE turned off, which makes me think that it is using the EDGE even when it says it is using wifi. It does mean that the EDGE speeds are quite impresive.

Tailor is right. The simple fact to make the browser works via wifi in the advanced settings make it work this way.
It's not normal that you can't browse websites without edge on.

I'm really not sure what is happening on your phone!
You set the default browser which is good but it's not always as straight forward as that as bookmarks have the browser setting stored in them as well.
If you open the browser and ensure it says WiFi browser at the top, if it doesn't then press the blackberry key, "Change Browser" and select "Wifi browser".
If you now enter a new address to go to, rather than a bookmark or one in your history, then you should be using the WiFi. this is apparent by the arrows flashing over the WiFi logo in the top right.
If this is't the case then let us know where it deviates.

Any news regarding our common issue?

No, nothing yesterday and today i'm chasing him but his phone is switched off.
This is what normally happens, i'll keep trying and i'll get him eventually.
He's damn good when i do get him so i'm not paniciking yet!

Going to try that now and see it it makes any difference as i still haven't heard anything from o2 who incedently have now updated their downloads to include a much older version of the software!

hi guys,
o2 page and bberry page are predefined to use the 02 network. those bookmarks cannot be altered in any ways neither the way they connect to the internet.
anything else on the system can use WIFI except those 2 bookmarks.

now my question today is software related.
1) I cannot make opera 4 use the WIFI.
2) Gmail doesn't work - comes up with an error
3) Google maps - error.

Your help is much appreciated.

1. requires UMA as dar as Im aware and o2 still dont have this setup.
2. ? not managed this myself, best iv managed is 1k loading in the top corner, and to get this i had to disable the firewall on my bb.
3. It requires interprocess comunications in options > security > apps. But its rather data heavy.

Any further news on uma through o2 bis off anyone?

I can get Opera working over WiFi by setting the APN under the blackberrys TCP/IP Settings. I just used mobile.o2.co.uk., user o2web and pw password
O2 are still working with me to get the Blackberry over WiFi resolved, I hear from them every other day, I would imagine you'll know it works about the same time as I will as the WiFi will come up on your mobiles but i'll post here anyhows.

i had a contact with an Orange tech which was not so bad.
indeed he finally told me that my BB should had an issue and that i had mine to be replaced.
I don't believe it could change things because of what i have read so far.

oh, just tryng the opera over wifi, would be good if this works. not sure if id use it much but still.

EDIT: nope still cant get opera mini 4 to use my wifi. it keeps using edge connection. do i need anything extra to the apn name to force it to route over wifi or anything anywhere else like some form of midlet setting somewhere?

FALSE. TCP settings are O2 dedicated, nothing to do with the WIFI connection. You need the TCP settings in order to install Opera but you should not need them if you access the internet via WIFI.


Back to you...see above, unfortunately at the moment is nothing we can do. I'm in advanced dialogs with Opera team let's see if they can come up with a solution. I'll keep you updated anyway.
