Smile blackberry curve 8320 in canada - 12-25-2007, 01:00 PM

hey everyone
i just got a blackberry curve 8320. i live in toronto and am on rogers
i have set up my wifi to my home network and it seemed to be working until all of a sudden it stopped and it just wont work. ive gone through all the setups etc it says im connected to "home" but it wont let me browse the internet. i am freaking out since i paid so much money to unlock it etc so i really need it to work!
also, there was never any email set up app. when i first used it today. is this because i am not subscribed to a data plan yet?

THANKS SO MUCH
-caitlin

Yea, you won't get email or the browser until you get the Data Plan established with your carrier.

We have a WiFi section here, also, with loads of info from others' questions.

Yes, you can use WiFi without a Data Plan...
And here is the definitive discussion of what can and cannot be done without the Data plan.

Oh, I guess you haven't looked at the link I posted ^^?

More specifically: How do I set up Wifi on the BlackBerry? - BlackBerryFAQ

WiFi will work. You won't get UMA on Rogers. That is the biggest limitation of not being on TMo.

then if i click my browser i get this message
"You are not currently in an area that can handle data communication. As a result, the Browswer cannot retrieve any web pages."
but i am in an area that can handle data communication it just wont work!!any ideas???

ohhh... if i change my default browser to Wifi Browswer and i turn off mobile network capabilities will that mean that when blackberry connects me i am using my wifi? (even though there is still a yellow dash instead of a green check mark beside my wifi)
i think this may work but just to check with you!
thanks!!

If you have a data plan with Rogers it is automatically the Rogers version, although it will always display the logo of the original device branding.

It's likely a problem with your router.

Have you tried connecting to wifi without your sim card installed? If you are connected properly you should be able to connect.

An Apple router is likely the problem. There are known issues between the Apple routers and the wifi BB's.

its not really something i can replace. is there any way of making it work??
we may have a spare linksys one around the house. but is it possible to set that one up just for me and then have everyone else use the apple one? i paid a lot of money to get this phone without the plan to use in canada so its really not something i can just return or not worry about
thanks for your help

The Linksys one would work much better (unless it's an old wireless-b model.)

Like John said the Linksys is better and also get the latest firmware for it before you attempt to use it.

You need to use the latest from Linksys. Get the model number and version number off the label on the underneath side and then go to the Linksys website and get the latest firmware for it.

What is the model number and version number?

If you do a search of the forums for apple router or apple airport or the like you'll find dozens of threads of frustrated apple router users. Sorry for the bad news.
