Default HELP!! Get my BB talking to the wifi! - 05-10-2008, 04:00 PM

I'm really hoping someone can help me as Orange as less than useless.

I have a Blackberry 8320 in the UK, provided by Orange. My home internet provider is through Tiscali and I have a Linksys wireless router. For the purposes of trying to make this work I have removed the WEP security from the wireless in the house so it now an open network.

When I search for wireless networks via the BB it finds mine and I am able to connect to it. So, "HomeNetwork" appears OK on the BB screen. However, the wifi icon remains greyed out and I cannot get away from GPRS or EDGE. I think what I'm looking for is UMA? The reception in my house is awful for Orange so it would be great if I could link up to the wireless to remedy the problem for making calls.

Can anyone in the world suggest what I can do to make my BB start picking up the network so it changes to UMA?

Finally, please reply in relatively layman's terms.

Thanks!

do you have the latest firmware on the router? Have you opened up ports 500 and 4500 and enabled IPSec for UMA?

You might take a peek at the FAQ's for wifi/uma at Main Page - BlackBerryFAQ and try some of the suggetions there.

Thanks for the reply.

The TCP is blank. There are three fields; (1) APN, (2) username and (3) password. None of the fields have anything beside them.

Yes, the 8320 is from Orange. 100% on this one!

I just downloaded the latest firmware after reading a suggestion of the FAQ page but it doesn't seem have to done anything this time. I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea what you mean by ports 500 and 4500...you're talking to a bit of techno-phobe I'm afraid. Can you help people like me or am I beyond help?

putting in orangewap hasn't seemed to have changed anything.

I should probably also mention that UMA was working fine yesterday but has suddenly stopped working and I can assure you I haven't changed any setting in the interim on either the BB or the router.

Just did a battery pull and nothing has changed. It's so frustrating, it can find my wireless network and supposedly connect to it. When I go to manage connections it's got the green tick beside the mobile one, and the yellow/amber one beside the wifi one. It's almost like it's seeing the network but not actually connecting to it for the purposes of data etc.

Orange are being absoluately useless, saying they can't advise me since I don't use Orange broadband. I can't imagine there will be that disclaimer in the sales literature.

How long did you have your 8320? Some wireless carriers do strange things with devices few days after activation, like suddenly removing features they don't think should be enabled for device.

Make me think they do some batch type of processing of new activations, like weekly. If your device was only working for few days and stopped, it is quite possible carrier did it to you.

This seems to work in with your timeframe...it's been active only since Friday. If this is the case, should it remedy itself in the coming days?

No, it will not. The only remedy is to call Orange and ask them enable WiFi service for your blackberry.

If they turned it off, they turned it off.

Moffmeister, I spoke to Orange again yesterday who said (again) that they can't support anyone else's ISP other than Orange. The wifi for Orange is apparently still in a trial mode so they don't officially offer the service, hence they can give very limited support. That's the line they threw me anyway.

I'm probably going to change to Orange broadband so I can get this working. It's probably doing exactly what they want, but my signal problem remains until I can get this sorted.

It's a miracle, the UMA has started to work. No settings were changed either on my end or Orange's end. Random, totally random. It's currently flitting between uppercase and lowercase UMA but at least it's progress.
