Default Wifi & UMA - 05-18-2008, 09:35 AM

I got this new 8120 from T Mobile. I connect my phone to my home router and I can surf internet over wifi but cannot connect any application which uses wap like opera mini or bbweather..blah blah blah. Now I tried unchecking mobile network and made a call and it works ... when I shut down my router it fails to make a call ...now if switch on Mobile network I can make calls but cannot surf internet.

Am I using that hotspot thing...I checked with tmobile and I dont have any data plan or any hotspot on my account..

How does UMA work....and why do we need hotspot plan if it works without it.

I am just confused....blackberry has open a new world of technology for me

Hi, I'm also newbie for BB but not TMO. To surf the internet, you need at the very least either WAP (aka T-Zones) for $5.99/month (check on price please) or a data plan.

I am not sure if 8120 is an UMA phone, check TMO website or call them. Even if UMA phone, without data plan or WAP hack, not sure if you can make calls using wifi. Again best to call TMO and ask for BB tech support...they are very patient and will explain clearly.

I used to have WAP and was able to hack my Treo to get free data and there is supposedly a similar hack for the BB - best to search howardchui.com forum for this.HowardForums: Your Mobile Phone Community & Resource - HotSpot@Home

Good luck and I'm sure other's will jump in.

The 8120 is a UMA phone.
You do not need the H@H plan for it to work. That is a pricing plan and impacts how your minutes are used.

What router do you have at home? UMA does not work with some routers.

Did you check out this thread -> http://www.blackberryforums.com/wifi...ma-8320-a.html

That may give some guidance. In the WiFi diagnostics, what UMA error message are you getting?

I think...it always works without hotspot...only if you have that feature your call over wifi wont be counted in your minutes.

Right now If I call over wifi its going against my minutes.
