Question Puzzle: WiFi voice on AT&T - 06-11-2008, 07:13 PM

I called an AT&T guy today (thinking ahead to the Bold) and asked about BB WiFi features - I told him as I understand it, I can seamlessly transition between a WiFi signal & a cell band signal for both data & voice.

Yes to data, he said, but no to voice. He said to get that to happen for voice, I would need a third-party application on an unlocked phone because AT&T will block it.

My current BB is an 8110 (no WiFi) so this isn't urgent - and as I understand it, the WiFi in the Bold isn't UMA - so my question is:

What can I do, if anything, to get that seamless transition on AT&T? Is there some short list of third-party applications that can handle that?

(If not, no sweat; I'll be happy just to get faster data traffic with 0-1.5 bars here).

Lacking that, is anybody offering any kind of reasonable femtocell device on AT&T?

FYI, I have to finish mounting a directional antenna for my Wi-Ex signal booster - an uphill battle with all the trees around here because they attenuate PCS-band signals pretty significantly - but still a bar or two of boost - and if I can parlay enough of that, I can get a little extra signal in play before the Bold gets here.

Any ideas, gang?

At&t doesn't offer any UMA services yet, Tmob does. If you were to get that BOLD onto Tmob, that seamless transition would be possible and will happen.

Likewise, you wouldn't be able to use 3g features with Tmob as they're not equipped with any 3g (not really yet) services.

AT&T will not use Wi-Fi for voice calls...

One article talking about it:

Thanks, evel - I just contacted AT&T and asked to be included in the trials, and contacted ip.Access and asked to be sent one of their Oyster 3G femtocell 3G access ports for my on-air editorial show & tell.
