Default Just upgraded to 4.5 on an 8320 - 07-21-2008, 05:28 PM

My default browser is the Hotspot browser. But when I initiate a page using the Hotspot browser and then quickly switch to MiniMoni I can see GPRS/EDGE activity. WTF? Is there a way to force WiFi usage.

I am connected to a Belkin F5D7233 Travel router which is connected to a Rogers Portable Internet modem (WiMax).

It was great when I had OS 4.2 I just about zero GPRS/EDGE usage.

Blackberrys I'ved had:
850 still have it, anyone want it?
7100r, 7520, 8700r, 8703e
Currently TMO 8320 unlocked on Rogers running 4.5.0.52

You can turn mobile network OFF for the blackberry, thus forcing it to use WiFi. Or take out the SIM card.

If you turn off the mobile network and just leave the wifi does it still show EDGE/GPRS activity in MiniMoni? It could be an issue with MiniMoni and OS 4.5.

No MiniMoni shows no activity if I am exclusively on Wifi. Mobie Network and Bluetooth off.

i was wondering the same thing when i first got my 8320.

what i did was open browser > general properties > default browser (internet browser).

from there... everytime i turn on my WiFi connection (it automatically connects to my Linksys Wireless N router), i'm always using WiFi data.

i know this from opening MiniMoni & turning on Traffic Watch... it shows 0Kb used.

maybe it has something to do with the other options i have?

make sure you're still connected & in range with your router?

when you're browsing, try just going to manage connections > mobile network options > data services (off)

Yeah, that's annoying. It would be nice if there was an option for data on WiFi only, but I guess carriers wouldn't like that much.

Maybe when enough corporations get blanket WiFi coverage they'll start to push it enough that RIM will add it despite the carrier objections. (Maybe a 3rd party app opportunity?)

Good point John, the MiniMoni author has confirmed that the product gives very unreliable numbers using OS 4.5, so it's quite possible it's a MiniMoni problem. I wouldn't count on it at this point.
