Thumbs up Blackberry Feature Enabler - UMA - 10-04-2007, 07:21 PM

I just have my 8320 for a couple of days and was only getting lower case uma or edge. Finally, yesterday I called back T-Mo and their PDA support told me that to get upper case UMA, I need to add an optional feature call BB Feature Enabler(Free). After I added that for free, UMA has been fantastic on my 8320 ever since. If anyone runs into same problem w/ uma only then try this and confirm.

I have noticed a few times my UMA has gone haywire and dropped it's wifi connection. When it's done that it will hook back up to EDGE, but it always stays lowercase and does not get data coverage. Sometimes the UMA will come back upper case or lower case.

The only way to remedy the problem for me is to power down and pull the battery, even a Cap+Alt+Del doesn't bring the radio back.

To fixed that problem. Turn off wifi and then the GSM radio, wait a few secs, then just turn on the GSM connection then turn on the wifi connection. I think that the UMA and EDGE are trying to request BB services at the same time and takes a long time for the BB servers to realize its two different request and to choose the right one to connect to.....
It should choose exactly what your connection preference is but TMO has yet to work the bugs out on that

I can confirm this... I recently had to cancel my data plan (long story) and I called T-Mo BB support... They added this feature and walla.... Uppercase UMA ect and yes it is a free addon.... It only allows you the ability to connect with uppercase UMA to your home router but it's what I needed at this point!

Thanks BBFan11!

One problem you may not have noticed is weather or not you tried to make a call with UMA on your bluetooth. If you do so you call will most likly drop, weather in a Hotspot or in a wifi area. I have tested it with several T-Mobile Curves and they all have the same result. While in UMA no bluetooth will work. I have tried it with three diffrent bluetooth devices from diffrent companies and same result. Sounds like a software glitch

I don't think it's a software glitch, though maybe. It seems as though the frequencies conflict.

Hopefully all the issues with the 8320 people have been experiencing will be fixed in the coming weeks. Or I might cry.

Nothing happens that quick. The 8830's and first 8300's had major calendar sync issues and it took quite a while for them to get fixed.

Default upper case UMA or lower case uma and Yahoo! Go - 11-21-2007, 08:07 AM

I just installed the new Yahoo! Go for the 8320 a few days ago. Everything was working fine until I go a connection error e33 in Yahoo! Go. After uninstalling and re-installing Go about 10 times I noticed that it finally worked when the 8320 was in the lower case uma mode. Once it changed to the upper case UMA the Yahoo! Go failed to connect. I wrote a letter to Yahoo to see if they know anything. I just decided to uninstall Yahoo! Go until I hear something to resolve this issue. When it worked it was pretty cool.

Yes. I have the BB data plan. I just confirmed my suspicion. My blackberry has been on the lower case uma for the last hour so I just re-installed Yahoo! Go with no problem Everything work. I'm sure now that if and when it switches back to the upper case UMA that Yahoo! Go will again fail to connect.

But having wap.voicestream.com in the apn field under Options >Advanced Options >TCP should help.

Leave the username and password blank.

Then reboot the device and try it again.

well....I've been on the lower case uma most of the day and all is working fine with Yahoo! Go. Yes.. the apn is set correctly with wap.voicestream.com only. Yahoo! Go is not an instant messenger..not sure if that's what you mean by IM client. Rather Yahoo! Go brings together various yahoo services such as maps, email, news, weather, and flickr...sort of like live search.

I had the exact same problem when I first got my curve the day they came out. Only lowercase uma/edge. I had to call T-mo and they told me that they should have activated this (free feature enablber) for me. They did it, and I pulled the battery, rebooted, and got uppercase EDGE/UMA.

I must admit the sgt was/is correct. I have the data plan and I have the APN set correctly. The issue I was having earlier seems to be tied to Yahoo! Go only. It clears up after a while (referring to the connection error "e33). When my phone goes to lower case edge/gprs/uma I just go to the my-t-mobile site and refresh the service books and my upper case EDGE/GPRS/UMA returns. But when yahoo! Go works, it connects wether I have upper case or lower case.

I'm getting this same error with Yahoo Go as of today. Yesterday it was working fine and today error e33. There's something blocking the connection to Yahoo. Everything else such as Opera browser works fine. Did a battery pull and nothing changed. I changed nothing in any settings at all. The only thing that happened between yesterday and today is auto off for 7 hours.

I have an 8320 with the Enabler add-on with NO data plan. Am I able to use Yahoo Go! or Google Apps without the data plan?

I'm new @ the "world of BB" Still learning...everything. Does the Maps application require the 19.99 plan to work? I'm also learning TMO loves to beat around the bush about what the device does and does not do.

Yes, anything that uses data requires a data plan.

BBMaps does require the Blackberry plan, as does email and pin messaging and browsing. There are other apps that may only require a TCP (gprs) plan.

As far as your last short sentence..."Also I can never connect to Wifi," you're going to need to elaborate as we need a lot more info to help.

Is there something like the "Blackberry Feature Enabler" for AT&T?

I live in an area where signals from cell and everything else go into some black hole. I use the wifi-uma here at home, once I leave the town I have somewhat decent signal.

Anywho, I called TMO and asked for the BB Enabler, they did it... and I found nothing to be "enabled" that was disabled. Everything that was "service is not enabled on this handset", was still, well disabled. BBMaps, yahoo, msn, aim, icq, nothing works. I've changed every setting I could find, no dice. Google apps, nope... the browser still works.

I've reset the phone several times, I've got a nice collection of service books. I deleted all the apps that gave me that stupid "pay us $20+ per month to use your own internet connection". Amazingly, the thing seems to run a little faster now that all that trashware is gone. The Dash was better at the whole data thing, I think... too bad it doesn't have UMA.

The BB Feature Enabler only gets rid of the data connection refused message and will enable the old OZ instant messenger to work (albeit not very well.) BB Messenger won't work nor will most of the other apps out there. If an app will work over wifi then you can use that. Some apps can use a TCP connection and you can buy the 5.99 webnwalk plan. However, remember that this is a BlackBerry and it's designed to be used with a BlackBerry data plan. All the BB features go through RIM in Canada. The BB data plan is basically a subscription to the RIM services. Your carrier only provides the connection to that system. That's why BB data plans cost a little more. You are basically paying your carrier for that connection and RIM for the services. Great system but you have to pay for it.

I have bb 8220. new to bb's. I do not have the data plan nor do i have much use for it. i just need to update my appointment calendar and occasionally contacts. i'm a heavy google user. shouldn't google sync work with blackberry feature enabler active. I do get uppercase UMA when connected to wifi but still cannot use google sync. or any of the apps. It even shows under mytmobile.com services that i do have the blackberry feature enabler. any suggestion? i would greatly appreciate!

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

*possibly* if you enter wap.voicestream.com in the apn field under options >advanced options >TCP. If that doesn't do it then you're out of luck. BB feature enabler won't do it.
