Blackberry maps works without adding the data plan.
Opera does not.
Aim works.
T-zones no longer works. (Default browser)
No idea why.

Added the 19.99 data plan, just waiting for the service books.
They had to remove the Blackberry Feature Enabler to add on the data plan.

Hi,
I've had the BB 8320 for two days with the BB unlimited Data plan from T-Mobile. Yesterday, I cancelled the Data plan and got the BB feature enabler added to my account. I could not use the three E-mail accounts that I created with the Set-up Internet E-mail icon.
When I tried to send an E-mail it said Service blocked.
Is this normal?
Also, all my saved bookmarks had to be edited and changed to use Wifi Browser.
Here is a list of what works without Data plan:
BB Maps
Berry Phone Lookup
Beyond411
Opera Mini
Windows Live Messenger
Wifi Browser
Thanks

Feature enabler is not a "free" way of getting data. Email REQUIRES a Blackberry Data Plan--not just feature enabler. Feature enabler only gives you service books for things like sms type IM programs, MMS, and on the 8320 better access to wifi data. That's it.

John, Thanks for the clarification. I sent several MMS and could not see any charges on my account. Are the SMS and MMS free via Wifi without Data plan? Google Maps and Mail would be nice to have working. Also, using UMA all my calls that were supposed to be Mobile to Mobile are marked U and taken out of my shared minutes.
Update: MMS charges showed on my account. After calling T-mobile, Mobile to Mobile showed as U call type would be counted as F or Free Mobile to Mobile at the end of the billing cycle.

I may keep this 19.99 plan. It's great having the internet anytime. Also, I don't see UMA anywhere on my phone, just EDGE. This normal?

To which $19.99 plan are you referring? Also, you have to be connected to wifi in order to get UMA.

MidpSSH works on WiFi (no data plan) -
11-21-2007, 11:34 PM
I'm with T-Mobile (free feature enabler) with a Curve 8320/4.2.2.180. Using MidpSSH 1.6.0 I can append the following to the host:port in order to connect (all on one line, including spaces, without the quotes):
Code:
";DeviceSide=True;ConnectionUID=S TCP-WiFi;ConnectionSetup=delayed;retrynocontext=true"
For instance, if I want to connect to 192.168.1.2 on port 22, I would enter it this way (again, all one line, including spaces, without the quotes):
Code:
"192.168.1.2:22;DeviceSide=True;ConnectionUID=S TCP-WiFi;ConnectionSetup=delayed;retrynocontext=true"
Here's where I found this:

BB 8820 wifi email? -
11-25-2007, 01:06 AM
I have had moderate success getting my new 8820 to work with wifi browsing.
Now the question is how to start push email. Speaking with in store & over the phone CS from AT&T, RIM, and reading this (page 6 chart, http://na.blackberry.com/eng/ataglan...Via_Wi-Fi.pdf). You should be able to use AT&T / RIM BIS over wifi with NO data package... However I am unable to get this started... I know everyone says you need it, but this graph from RIM and talking with RIM both say you don't...
any thoughts?

Apps work over WiFi only with TMobile's Blackberry Unlimited Add-on enabled -
12-04-2007, 04:41 PM
All,
There seem to be a few lucky folks that can use non-TMobile-standard apps on their 8320s with a wifi connection. Although that was my intention when I purchased the 8320, the only time I was successful in using a WiFi connection with non-standard apps was with enabling the T-Mobile's Blackberry Unlimited Add-on service and for a few days after I disabled the service. There must be some service book settings or some other settings that we dont fully understand that make the magic for these lucky people. The rest of us are left with a walled-garden that only has UMA and browsing but not GTalk, Gmail (app), MobiO etc.
This is a shame on RIM's part since they are clearly siding with the telcos in not fully opening up their platform. At least somebody from RIM should publish some details about how to use their platform over a wifi connection if they are going to put such an interface on their phone.
Disgusted!

Unfortunately, its the applications themselves that need to have a change (see my earlier reply about MidpSSH).
I know that the only thing that reliably works for me over WiFi without a data plan is the WiFi Web Browser and MidpSSH (and for MidpSSH, it is not yet programmed in, but the inputs are not sanitized so much that I can't add the string to instruct the app to connect over WiFi myself).
I'm guessing Google hasn't figured out how to take care of this yet since WiFi is so new.

@Deckrider:
How did you get midpssh installed? I've tried every file OTA on the midpssh website for both versions 1.6 and 1.7. I keep getting "907 - Invalid JAR" or "Invalid COD" errors.

I had that problem too, but at some point it worked (dunno why). But there's always downloading to your PC and installing from the desktop.

Apps I have working using pure-wifi and wifi-uma -
12-06-2007, 02:33 AM
Just so I make myself clear what I mean by pure-wifi and wifi-uma.
pure-wifi: Basically the crackberry uses WiFi natively for TCP/IP and doesn't use UMA/uma at all.
wifi-uma: Basically if youre using WiFi-uma (or uppercase UMA) all your traffic goes through the GSM data services. The GSM data/voice goes to your Wi-Fi and gets packaged using IPSec tunneling/encryption to a T-Mobile server, which then hands it off to the internet. So basically with WiFi-uma/UMA all your voice/data is proxied over to T-mobile (which probably leads to unnecessary hops and latency for data).
So far I have LogicMail, midpssh, and JmIRC working under pure-wifi and wifi-uma (actually JmIRC doesn't seem to work because wifi-uma/t-mobile doesn't seem to allow port 6667 traffic, it however can do IRC over smtp/imap/pop3/etc. ports no problem).
The wifi-uma settings were trivial, just make sure you set the TCP APN to wap.voicestream.com with a blank user/pass.
For logicmail and midpssh I used the following string (which has been posted earlier by someone):
E.g. for logicmail since I use IMAPS and SMTPS I use the following for my imap hostname (adjust for your own needs as necessary, e.g. port 139/25 if you use imap/smtp):
mail.my_company.com:993;DeviceSide=True;Connection UID=S TCP-WiFi;ConnectionSetup=delayed;retrynocontext=true
mail.my_company.com:465;DeviceSide=True;Connection UID=S TCP-WiFi;ConnectionSetup=delayed;retrynocontext=true
For midpssh:
mail.my_company.com:22;DeviceSide=True;ConnectionU ID=S TCP-WiFi;ConnectionSetup=delayed;retrynocontext=true
For JmIRC:
irc.mzima.net:6667;DeviceSide=True;ConnectionUID=S TCP-WiFi;ConnectionSetup=delayed;retrynocontext=true
Also disable the use of MDS proxies when using pure-wifi, but enable them for WiFi-uma.
I hope this helps someone in the same pathetic situation as myself, no data plans, no nothing. Just a phone that is capable of wireless and almost all apps don't support them. Heh.

Could someone give this a try? I don't have an 8320, but if this works for wifi only I might buy one:
Google has released a blackberry / google calender sync app:
Mobile
here's hoping it works wifi only...

now if only logicmail were able to store messages on my phone...

2.the indikator is connected. but always yellow. why it wont change to green?

wifi APN? -
12-13-2007, 01:19 PM
I tried snappy22's tip on telenav's application, by copying the line of code into the APN field. And it WORKED! so im trying to figure out if its possible to insert that same line into my TCP settings to get my 8820 to use wifi for everything. I was wondering if anyone knew what port number I should be using to access teh internet. Anyone know???
-thanks
