You most definitely DO need a BB data plan for BBMessenger, even with the 8320 wifi. It uses PIN messaging which is a RIM data service.

that's what I've been told. So I called and went personally to the store and was told that it was a feature. I do not have a data plan and I'm currently not connected under wi-fi and I'm messaging with 3 ppl as we speak.

So, you have an 8320 with no data plan and are using Blackberry Messenger?

I suppose its possible with the feature enabler (a tmobile free option for those with no data plan) but wasn't it confirmed back in this thread that it didn't work?

That is correct. I'm not sure about the enabler you speak of... I did read about it on this thread... However, weren't they also discussing wether some things worked and others didn't?? If, I do have the enabler... it works for me!! So again I confirm... No, I do not have a data plan and YES, I do have BB Messenger...!

Interesting. Can you send a regular PIN message to another BB user?

OK... Once again I spoke to T-Mobile and finally got someone that knew what they were talking about... I have BB Messenger because even though I don't have a data plan... I have unlimited email...they consider that a data plan. So, It's no enabler or special magic... it's just my email...! Hope this clears a lot up..!

CurvyBerry, let's test it, ok?

Send me a PIN or add me to BBM.

Yes, thanks. The email plan is definitely a data plan and pin messaging IS included in that. That's why BBMessenger works. Thanks for clarifying.

At the risk of my question getting lost in this thread, I'll ask it again. Can you send / receive SMS messages (for free on WiFi) without a data plan or SMS plan?

Thanks.

Yes, you can send over uma with no data plan. No, you will be charged for voice and sms according to your voice and sms rate plan.

I got the “BlackBerry Unlimited Add-on” three times, first I canceled in after 2 days then got “BlackBerry Feature Enabler” but everything, Messengers, Google maps, etc stopped working, I waited one week and got it again this time I let it run for 4 days and then canceled it again and got “BlackBerry Feature Enabler” but no luck, however I tried it again this time I kept it for over 10 days and once canceled the result was same. I had upper case UMA all the time and saw all service books as well. Not sure what else I should do to get lucky.

So I finally got my Curve. Its great. Except Blackberry Help! doesn't come up. It keeps trying to access the edge network instead of my wifi. I can get on other sites on wifi but mobile.blackberry.com refuses to work. Any thoughts?

viigo along with several other wifi complaint apps work just fine on the bb after you enter your carrier's apn info under options>advanced options>tcp. don't know if you get charged for this though.

since I have T-Mobile, I entered wap.voicestream.com

I left the username and password blank.

In Viigo, which network protocol do you have to set in order for it to work under wifi? do you leave it on Auto, BIS, WAP, TCP, etc? Seems like I tried all of them, but none worked.

I've added the APN for my service provider, and the applications start working. But I'm not sure if the applications are using Wi-fi or GPRS.

How can I possibly check that?

Good info in this thread.

Here is my experience with applications over wifi. I have an unlocked BB 8320 on the AT&T network with no data plan of any sort yet. Also, AT&T doesn't have the UMA feature. I can connect easily to my home wifi network as well as public wifi hotspots on the road. I can get the following to work over a wifi connection:

-BB wifi browser
-IM+ instant messenger
-Viigo newsreader
-BB Messenger
-FreeRange newsreader

Here is the catch though. Eventhough I'm over a wifi connection, I still have to enter my carrier's APN info under Options>Advanced Options>TCP in order for some of the above apps to work. What I don't know is whether entering/using this APN business now means I'm on some sort of cellular data connection with charges and no longer on a purely wifi connection. Can anyone shed some more light on this.
