The cavalcade of obsolete frequency counters just never seems to end. I sold one of this model last year, and just found yet another one! With any luck I\'ll live long enough to clear out the last 50 years of electronic junk.
This specimen is a Heathkit model IM4100. Has five, count \'em FIVE red LED digits, type Fairchild FND500. It sure has been a long time since that company made 7-segment LED display digits.
Its upper-frequency limit is specified at 30 MHz.
I found a complete PDF of the manual at a web site called vintage-radio. Gargle found it for me. Can\'t include a complete URL in a sale listing. Not allowed.
Date codes on the chips inside are mostly from 1975, more or less. It probably isn\'t much newer than that. And it\'s built with the original \"standard\"-power TTL integrated circuits. Power hogs. Gotta figure those chips ran kinda hot when it worked. A few chips have been replaced, mostly the ones that run the hottest. I don\'t see any evidence of lightning damage, but you never know.
*ALL* the integrated circuits (chips) are in sockets. This is a mixed blessing. Sure does reduce the labor to replace a bad one. But it raises the possiblity of poor electrical contact between the socket and a chip. I don\'t see any of the TI-brand TTL chips with silver-plated legs. TI did this to make the pins solderable with less heat stress. But it causes trouble when a silver-plated pin in a socket becomes tarnished. Exposed silver will just turn black, eventually.
It\'s broke. I won\'t fix it. I won\'t even plug it in to see if it lights up. Don\'t want to be on the hook for \'s \"as pictured\" rule. I guarantee that if you DON\'T plug it in, it will stay dark, \"as pictured\".Maybe I should do like the guy who puts the sign saying \"Buy this piece of radio history\" behind all his ancient sale items. This thing was not all that cheap when it was new 45 or 46 years ago. But you could say that about a monochrome television, too. Not much market for one of those any more.
Now we get to find out if the market value of this gem is less than what it costs to ship it to a new home. It just fits in a USPS \"medium\" flat-rate box, hence the high shipping cost. I sure wouldn\'t pay that much for a broken IM4100, but I still have plenty of working frequency counters on hand. The broken ones are ALL going somewhere else. If this one doesn\'t sell, it goes to the cruncher. It will **NOT** be relisted if it fails to sell.There are NO RETURNS AT ALL FOR ANY REASON OF ANY KIND!No matter how good they sound.
