Up for sale is a true piece of history: I was commissioned a few years back to rebuild a very unique piece of history: Back in the Cold War, the U.S. Navy fleet of nuclear submarines were each equipped with a radio room IBM Selectric for "printing" out the many received messages from The Department of Defense in their day to day operations as a nuclear deterrent. These machines were a welcome replacement for the older Underwoods that were used. These were fondly named "721" the IBM model number for the smaller 11" Selectric that are so popular these days. It had a list of options added that are unique: Spring mounted bases so it would not be damaged by the ship's vibration and also kept it from sliding or ($%^&*) falling from the radio console. Also added was a small pilot light to ensure strict "silent mode" for Naval operations below the surface. I will be adding many features and photos as this week progresses. The outbreak of Covid put a halt to the exhibit for a time, now it has been cancelled by the current administration. Thus the offering here on .
It has been crated in the exact ocean-going wooden crate that was used to transport these machines and will be included in the listing.
I have completely overhauled this machine per my "seller's other items". This is not simply a warmed over oiled and tested and cleaned, this is completely chemically cleaned, re lubricated and I have basically remanufactured every aspect of this machine and it is as new. Inside, where only techs can see, is the real value of my work. This is a museum grade restoration, ordered for exhibit. This was a group effort and all the parts were donated by ex-IBMer's from all over the world! They insisted their OEM-IBM parts from years in their 'sock drawer' be used for this restoration! I replaced far more assemblies and parts than were needed but the attachment and sentiment from these ex-sailors is real!
The color is "Torpedo Grey" a U.S. Navy-issued color. Many, many pictures available.
FedEx and professional crating for no worries. Too many extras to list: Custom heavy vinyl cover, ribbons, elements, spares, etc... The crate is in itself amazing.
One year warranty on everything.
