Communications
The mainframe comes with a standardRS-232host interface and GPIB (IEEE-488.2) as anoption.Allcommands and queries to individual modules are routed through the mainframehost interface. Messagesare routed based on their port number, with themainframe seamlessly relaying data to and from theappropriatedestination. This messaging system is also used to communicatethrough the two auxiliaryRS-232 ports.Usingthese ports, any number of SIM900 mainframes and otherRS-232instruments may be controlledthrough one host interface in the mastermainframe.
Each port in the mainframe has independent511-byte input and outputqueues. Themainframe also performs anyrate adaptation needed when communicating through theports. A an echo of all communications to and from the mainframe to easedebugging of newsetups.
Timebase
The mainframe provides a master 10MHz clockto the modules which lock their internal timebases to thisreference.Themaster clock in the SIM900 is based on a low-noisecrystaloscillator. Theoptional timebase input (option02)permits phase-locking the master clock to an external 10MHz reference(like the SIM940 Ruofferium Standard) through a rear-panel BNCinput.
Start-Up Script
A 4000byte start-up script is maintained innon-volatile memory in theSIM900. Whenenabled, the commands storedin the script are executed each time the mainframe is turned on. This providesa simple way to ensure all modules are automatically set to a desiredstartingconfiguration.
Front Panel
Front-panel LED indicators provide statusinformation for the mainframe and also monitor communications between the hostand installedmodules. Indicatorsdisplay host interface, timebase,communications status, start-up script, and powerinformation.
Power Supplies
All modules operate from various combinations of±5V, ±15V and+24V. Thesewell regulated andfiltered DC voltages are supplied by the mainframe power supply which is forcedair cooled to maintain stableperformance. All supplies are currentlimited with a trip-off circuit in case of an over voltage orshortcircuit.
